New accessible bus stop signs are being installed at all DART bus stops across the Des Moines metro.
Designed with input from the Iowa Department for the Blind, Des Moines Chapter, National Federation of the Blind of Iowa, and Iowa Council of the United Blind, the signs have Braille and raised lettering to help riders identify their stop. All text on the sign is raised so it can be read by touch, an important feature because not everyone who is blind or low vision reads Braille. The font printed on the signs was created by the Braille Institute and uses specially designed characters that are easier for people with low vision to tell apart. Each sign is mounted at a height that makes it easy to reach for both standing riders and those using mobility devices.
The new Braille signs are one of the many ways we’ve worked to make our printed materials, bus stops, website and overall on-bus experience more accessible as we launched our new bus routes this year.
We look forward to how these signs can help make DART bus stops easier to identify and navigate for everyone in our community!
