Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System

Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System IPERS is a retirement plan designed to provide secure pension benefits for Iowans in public service. IPERS is the state’s largest public retirement system.

We are committed to transparent communication with our members, lawmakers and all Iowans. The Iowa Legislature created IPERS in 1953 to attract and retain quality public employees, including those who teach our children, maintain our roads and parks, care for our most vulnerable residents, and protect our citizens. Today, IPERS' Trust Fund continues to hover around $40 billion and pays more than $2.5 billion in annual benefits.

After working 39 years in public schools, Becky Vincent has officially retired from Davenport Community Schools. A longtime instructional coach and classroom teacher, Becky shares that what she'll miss the most is witnessing a students' eyes light up when a tough subject finally clicks. In retirement, Becky is looking forward to having the flexibility to spend more time with grandchildren who live out of state, something she says wouldn't be possible without IPERS. "IPERS retirement benefits are amazing for teachers. At the end of the road, after all the hard work we have done, IPERS is really the main avenue for us to retire." Congratualtions to Becky, and all the other educators who are retiring in 2026!

Two entities are established in Iowa law to provide oversight of IPERS' administration. The IPERS Investment Board meets quarterly and is primarily charged with creating and reviewing the policies that guide IPERS' investment program. The Benefits Advisory Committee represents IPERS members and employers, and exists to understand and improve the administration of IPERS' benefits program. These groups have very different responsibilities but are equally important to IPERS' success.
