Congratulations to Team USA men’s and women’s hockey teams for winning Olympic gold! 🇺🇸 St. Louis was well represented at this year’s games, with five players from the area participating — Joy Dunne, Clayton Keller, brothers Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, and Nick Saracino, who played for Team Italy.

Des Peres has a proud connection to Team USA hockey. Former NHL goalie Ben Bishop, who grew up in Des Peres, played in several international tournaments for Team USA.

Bishop, who was drafted by and played for the St. Louis Blues, had a distinguished NHL career, leading both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup finals. He was a 3-time Vezina Trophy finalist, an NHL All-Star, and set multiple franchise records with the Lightning in his 11 seasons in the league.

DPHS salutes his achievements!

Additional entries found in the journal of Des Peres farmer John Snyder include a visit with George Ballas (Ballas Road) and a trip to Isaac Woods’ mill in present-day Chesterfield (Woods Mill Road).

Snyder’s records provide valuable insight into life on a 19th-century St. Louis County farm. The workers on his farm consisted of family members, hired hands, and slaves. They made frequent trips along Manchester Road to sell farm products at the market in St. Louis.
