Desert Hot Springs - Emergency Preparedness / CERT

Desert Hot Springs - Emergency Preparedness / CERT The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program is a 20 hour course that is FEMA and OES certified.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborh

ood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

(9/28/16) Earthquake alert: An earthquake advisory has been issued for all Southern California counties based upon the earthquake swarm that occurred in Bombay Beach (located in Imperial County and south of where the San Andreas fault ends).

While there is no evidence of an imminent earthquake, the advisory reminds everyone about the importance of disaster preparedness and what to do during and after an earthquake, including:

• Drop, cover and hold on during the shaking
• If driving, pull to the side of road and stop until shaking stops
• Do not stop or take cover under over passes or bridges
• If you smell gas, evacuate the area
• Do not handle or drive over downed power lines

This is also a good time to review your family’s action plan. Visit www.RivCoReady.org and on Twitter for valuable preparedness information.

Also register cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses with the County’s Early Warning Notification System at www.RivCoReady.org/EWNS.
