From Plantation to Oil Refinery

Did you know Destrehan Plantation was once part of an oil refinery?

In 1914, the Mexican Oil Company purchased the property and developed a refinery. During this time, the plantation house was used as refinery offices, while the former enslaved quarters became housing for Black families.

After the refinery closed, Destrehan entered a new chapter when the property was given to the River Road Historical Society, which continues to own and preserve it today.

Discover the many chapters of Destrehan’s history.

Greek Revival Architecture

Architecture can tell a story all on its own.

Destrehan Plantation’s Greek Revival design reflects the wealth and status of the free family who owned the property. But the craftsmanship and construction also reflect the labor of the enslaved people who built and maintained the home.

The Interpretive Room helps tell this important part of Destrehan’s history and gives visitors a closer look at the people behind the architecture.

Come explore the architecture and history of Destrehan for yourself.
