Charles Paquet: The Master Builder Behind Destrehan Plantation

Did you know that Destrehan Plantation was built under the direction of a free man of color? In 1787, master builder Charles Paquet was contracted to oversee the construction of the plantation. During this period, he was granted his freedom, making his story a remarkable part of Destrehan’s history.

Working alongside enslaved laborers assigned to the project, Paquet spent three years bringing the plantation to life. More than two centuries later, his skill and craftsmanship remain evident throughout the historic home.

Visit Destrehan Plantation to discover the people and stories that shaped this extraordinary site. Tours are offered daily from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Tickets available at destrehanplantation.org.
