BANG!

COWEN: If we turn to senior management of large American companies, as a class of people — and I know it’s hard to generalize — but what do you see them as just not getting?

PETERSON: I would caution them not to underestimate the danger of their human resources departments.

And what the Intellectual Dark Web gets wrong.

Who’s Leading Whom? Having a Plan “B” will help keep You Free When leaders hear advice to hold their members responsible, rather than trying to change their behaviors, the response if often “yeah but”... It usually goes something like this. “Yeah but, I really need this team to step up its productivity or my customers are going to be unhappy (or my business will be in trouble). [ 381 more words ]

College and university scholars created a word cloud during reintroductions in a round group meeting. The scholars were gathered with their benefactor organization during winter break. The scholarship sponsor wisely gathers the group together several times a year to take temperatures and offer wisdom and inspiration. During reintroductions, students were asked to offer a word and thirty seconds speaking about their reasons for the choice. [ 78 more words ]

Each day during the full year since Steve Geske’s “walk on”, I have thought of him. As I presumed just after his death, what I learned to know of him and the countless hours of time we spent with each other, continue to pricelessly serve me. His gifts of intellectual depth, spiritual adventure and maturity, relationship with nature, richness of conversation and limitlessly loyal friendship sustain and strengthen me and are central to a foundation for hope in my life. History produces examples of leadership demonstrating understanding of the value of the outside position on the emotional triangle. Scott Berg's biography of Woodrow Wilson captures Wilson's approach to armistice negotiations while many allies were calling for destructive punishments: "The people had done evil, but it was done under wrong leadership. He felt that 'to keep cool' was the first essential to the making of 'a peace of justice,' that whipping himself into 'a passion of rage' would render him unfit for the present task. Sherman's message to Grant, upon Grant's promotion to Lieutenant General: "You are now Washington's legitimate successor and occupy a position of almost dangerous elevation, but if you can continue as heretofore to be yourself, simple, honest and unpretending, you will enjoy through life the respect and love of friends, and the homage of millions of human beings that will award to you a large share in securing to them and their descendants a Government of Law and Stability...I believe you are brave, patriotic...unselfish, kindhearted and honest, as a man should be..."...

Dr. David Cox is Emeritus Professor of Educational Leadership (1992-2014) at Arkansas State University. We connected with him in 2012 and spoke to one of his classes through audio hook up. Dr. Cox is deeply interested in Edwin Friedman's work and the connection Healing Leaders explored between Friedman's thinking and contemporary leadership. Even if we can't make it change, we might as well learn something. "Stress reactivity shuts down open mindedness. When you are open minded, open-hearted, you are able to understand there are multiple perspectives in any situation. When that capacity is not grown or emphasized, you think you way is the only way, and anything that looks threatening toy your belief system you try to shut down." [ 147 more words ]
