Congratulations Mason Pender on your retirement!
After 20 years, Mason is starting the next chapter of his life. Like everyone he started as a blackhat. He climbed the ranks and becoming the assistant cheif eventually, something few firefighters have the opportunity for. He stepped down the last few years and enjoyed his time at the bottom of the ladder.
He proved himself invaluable as the department's treasurer. Steering the members to good fortune with his unique understanding of finances.
Mason is known for his good attitude and calm mindset. Many on the department regarded him for his high level of fitness while he held the fastest time for the physical agility test. He set a great example for the junior firefighters, and he will be missed.
"It's a bittersweet thing to retire from the active ranks, but I leave feeling accomplished and satisfied serving the community that I loved. From wearing a black hat, to red hat, then white hat, and back to black hat-it was an awesome ride. We accomplished great things over the last 20 years and I feel proud to be a small part of the 141 years of DLFD. It will go on without me of course, and I'm sure it will be hard to see the trucks roll out.
I'll personally miss being with the team, in all the situations we found ourselves in over the years. I'll miss seeing the growth of our younger firefighters. It's been great to see the development of our next group of leaders. I have no doubt that the Cheif and the crew will keep the department evolving as the times change.
I hope you all enjoy this ride. Believe me, the years go by quicker than you think and in the blink of an eye you are writing a retirement letter.
