Nonprofit organizations thrive because of dedicated board members who provide leadership, guidance, accountability, and a shared vision for the future. Their commitment helps transform ideas into lasting impact.

Our founding board’s belief in the importance of healing and support for survivors laid the groundwork for the organization Avalon is today. Their vision, advocacy, and dedication helped create a strong foundation that has allowed us to serve our community for 20 years.

Today, we honor Juneteenth—the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans were finally informed of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a celebration of liberation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for justice.

we recognize that freedom is not just a moment in history—it is a lived reality we are still working toward. For Black survivors of sexual violence, true liberation means access to safety, healing, and justice in a world that too often denies them all three.

Supporting Survivors Through Pregnancy and Beyond 🤍

At Avalon Healing Center, we recognize that pregnancy can bring unique challenges for survivors of sexual violence. In 2024, Avalon served approximately 15 pregnant women across our programs, including survivors who were pregnant at the time of an assault, became pregnant as a result of an assault, or were navigating pregnancy and childbirth while continuing their healing journey.

We also know that healing does not happen in isolation. Through partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations, and service agencies throughout Wayne County and beyond, we are building a strong network of support that helps survivors access the medical care, mental health services, advocacy, and resources they need at every stage of their journey. Together, we are providing trauma-informed, compassionate care that extends beyond forensic exams and acute services, connecting survivors with trusted OBGYN care and ongoing support.

This collaborative initiative aims to address both the physical and emotional impacts of trauma while helping reduce health risks that contribute to maternal health complications. By integrating medical care with healing services, we are working to ensure survivors receive the comprehensive care they deserve throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond.

Every survivor deserves to feel safe, supported, and empowered on their path to healing.

This Pride Month, our team at Avalon Healing Center was honored to participate in , connecting with community members, sharing resources, and celebrating the strength, resilience, and diversity of LGBTQIA+ survivors.

One of our favorite Pride Month traditions is creating an interactive art installation that invites individuals to share their voices, experiences, hopes, and messages of support. Each contribution becomes part of a larger story—one that reflects the power of community, healing, and belonging.

At Avalon, we believe that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. We are proud to stand alongside the LGBTQIA+ community this month and every month, creating spaces where survivors can find safety, affirmation, and connection.

June is PTSD Awareness Month 🤍

Sexual assault can leave more than physical scars—it can deeply affect the mind and spirit. Many survivors live with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition that can make even everyday life feel overwhelming.

For survivors, PTSD may look like:

- Flashbacks or nightmares that replay the trauma

- Avoiding people, places, or situations that feel unsafe

- Sudden panic, fear, or numbness without warning

- Feeling disconnected from their body, loved ones, or sense of self

- Struggles with trust, intimacy, or relationships

These responses are not weaknesses—they are the brain’s way of trying to survive the unspeakable.

We are incredibly grateful to our community partner - DTE Energy and more than 100 dedicated employees who came together during their CareForce Event to support survivors in our community.

With compassion and purpose, volunteers assembled more than 120 backpacks for Avalon Healing Center’s Outreach and First Response teams. Each backpack represents more than supplies—it represents care, dignity, hope, and the reminder that survivors are not alone.
