Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department (DPD), the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged Ian Johnson in connection with a fatal car accident that he caused after fleeing a traffic stop.
On July 2, 2026, Detroit Police Officers observed Johnson run a red light and initiated a traffic stop. Initially, Johnson came to a stop, but when officers approached his vehicle, they observed him place a rifle in the back seat of his vehicle before fleeing. Officers did not pursue Johnson.
Johnson drove south on Schaefer from W. Outer Drive towards McNichols. When he arrived at the intersection, he was going over 80 mph and ran another red light. The victim was driving east on W. McNichols through the green light when Johnson collided with her vehicle. The victim, 53-year-old Bernice Jackson, was killed in the crash.
Johnson was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A chemical analysis of his blood and urine revealed that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.195, was positive for benzodiazepines, and positive for cannabinoids.
Johnson has been charged with Homicide – Murder – Second Degree, Police Officer – Fleeing – First Degree, Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, and three counts of Weapons Felony Firearm.
Johnson was arraigned on August 28, 2026, and was given a $100,000 personal bond with tether. All suspects are presumed innocent pending further proceedings.
