In the heart of Detroit’s Westside, community orgs and members gather in a Black and Arab solidarity rally to stand up against Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 church who hosts and allies himself with white supremacist Jake Lang.

Jake Lang, along with some of his goons, protected by the police, appeared and continued to spew vile racist and xenophobic rhetoric in front of the church at protestors, while Pastor Sewell was nowhere to be found.

Folks came to send a message that the cowardice of grifters like Sewell and his support for far-right racists has no place in Detroit.

In Detroit, City Council and the mayor have so far failed to act on repeated requests by the movement to end their cooperation with ICE and take measures like the ones carried out in Chicago that would limit ICE’s presence and activity in the city.

Therefore, we want to organize an event that can expose the truth about what is going on, and make clear why a mass movement of workers, youth, and community members directly confronting ICE and the municipalities that cooperate with them and/or refuse to curtail their activity is the only way justice will be served and ICE ran out of our communities.

Public Tribunals have been used in the past by social movements and the Left to bring exposure to injustices and state violence, especially when they are being ignored by the courts and other governing bodies. In Detroit, civil rights activists organized a tribunal in the aftermath of the 1967 rebellion sparked by police brutality to call out the racist violence committed by Detroit Police and the National Guard during the rebellion. Over 3,000 people showed up to attend that tribunal, which included eyewitness testimony to the actions of police and the national guard.

Come join us and listen while community members share their experiences of being affected by, and fighting back against, the violent and racist system of immigration enforcement in America. This event will focus on exposing the activity of ICE in the Metro Detroit area and the ways in which municipalities — including the city of Detroit — cooperate with ICE. Our goal is to use the public tribunal as a way to continue and strengthen the movement against ICE.
