Inclusion in health care means more than providing services—it means making sure people have the information they need to understand and manage their own health.

In recognition of World Humanitarian Day, Albert Schweitzer Fellow Ladann Kiassat reminds us that health education must be accessible to everyone, including adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Through her Healthy Living Toolkit, developed in partnership with The Arc of Macomb County, Ladann is creating health education that uses plain language, focuses on practical concepts, and communicates to everyone in a respectful manner.

Because accessible health education isn’t simply about making information easier. It’s about making health care usable, empowering and inclusive.

🌎 World Humanitarian Day is celebrated on August 19

In recognition of the day, we are proud to highlight the humanitarian work of Elizabeth Henning, a Detroit Chapter Albert Schweitzer Fellow and graduate student at the University of Michigan, where she is pursuing a Master of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Equity.

Through her 2026–27 Schweitzer Fellowship at Authority Health, Liz has developed Service Beyond Service (SBS), a project focused on building social connection among veterans in Southeast Michigan through local, short-term volunteer service.

Rather than creating another formal program centered on discussing loneliness, Liz's work explores how shared service can create environments where connection, purpose and a sense of identity can develop naturally.

The quote featured in this carousel is an excerpt from Liz's World Humanitarian Day blog, “Recreating Shared Service and Identity Among Veterans.”

One of our favorite times of the year is here—Back to School! 💙

Authority Health Centers is excited to join the amazing team at Stevenson Elementary School as they welcome their little scholars and families back for another great school year!

We’re especially excited because Stevenson Elementary School is also home to an Authority Health Centers school-based health center—the Ira Land location. While our new space inside the school is still under construction, we couldn’t wait to start showing up for Stevenson scholars, families, and staff to help make the start of the school year a healthy and happy one! 🏫🩺💜

🧡 Connecting Detroit Seniors to Resources, Support & Community!

On August 11, Authority Health was proud to participate in the 1% Better Senior Expo in Detroit!

Members of our Healthy and Resilient Communities (HaRC) Community Health Worker team and Medicaid team spent the day engaging with seniors, sharing helpful information, answering questions, and connecting community members with resources that can support their health and well-being.

Events like the 1% Better Senior Expo give us another opportunity to meet people where they are and help make health information and community resources more accessible.

A big thank you to the 1% Better Senior Expo Engagement Team, fellow community partners, and everyone who stopped by the Authority Health table. We enjoyed the conversations, connections, and smiles! 💚🧡

"The moment that stayed with me most was Lauren Royall, a liver transplant recipient who stood up and told her story publicly for the first time. Hearing what that second chance meant to her put everything into perspective."

- Loretta V. Bush, President and CEO

This is why organ donation in communities of color is such an important health focus and pressing health matter. Stories like Lauren's and also knowing that they're currently 2600 other people living in who are just waiting on their day for a life saving transplant is why Authority Health hosted a press conference and was joined by Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie, Gift of Life Michigan's President and CEO Dorrie Collins Dils, and Detroit MOTTEP Foundation, Board Chair Dr. Silas Norman, as well as many other colleagues and community partners who are committed to increasing education and awareness on organ donation all year long and especially during National Minority Donor Awareness Month.
