Joshua Grant joins DDP as our new Political Organizer! Say hello, everyone 🙋🏽‍♂️

Joshua is a Detroit-based labor and community organizer with more than a decade of experience building collective power. He has organized healthcare workers, led electoral field programs, and managed initiatives supporting Black LGBTQ+ Detroiters. Joshua holds a Master of Social Work in Policy and Political Social Work from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Eastern Michigan University. His work is rooted in disability justice, worker power, voting rights, environmental justice, and the belief that communities most affected by injustice should lead the decisions that shape their lives.

Our Communications Department is looking for a movement artist with a passion for creating access through art and design. 📢 URGENT CALL TO ACTION: Sign the petition, attend the meeting, spread the word!

DDP strongly opposes any motion by the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners (BOPC) to eliminate the virtual public comment option from weekly Board meetings. The vote to remove this access point is a direct attack on the ability of the over 130,000 disabled Detroiters, and all Detroiters, to participate in the democratic oversight of their police department.

The majority of BOPC meetings are held at 3:00 pm on Thursdays at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters. For many residents, this time, place, and format creates insurmountable barriers. Those with physical disabilities, chronic illness, or mobility limitations may be unable to travel to Police Headquarters. Those who fear appearing at a police facility, including survivors of police violence and community members with justifiable reasons for concern, face a chilling effect on their participation. Working people who cannot leave their jobs at 3:00pm on a weekday are simply shut out.

Virtual public comment removes these barriers. It ensures that the voices of disabled Detroiters, people who often have the most direct and urgent concerns about policing, can be heard. Vocal public comment during BOPC meetings carries a weight that written online submissions do not: it guarantees that at least one commissioner will hear the speaker’s concerns in real time. Removing that option reduces accountability without improving anything.

Detroit Disability Power calls on every member of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners to vote NO, to preserve virtual public comment, and to reaffirm their commitment to equal access and public accountability for all Detroit residents.

🗳️⚖️ Too much is at stake for us everyday Detroiters this election cycle. We at DDP believe voting should be something that’s easy, simple, and accessible. Unfortunately, a heap of misinformation and intentional voter disenfranchisement stands between many Detroiters and a smoothly cast ballot. You’d be surprised how much a sincere call can help.

Join our team of Phone Canvassers working all the way up to the November election! Make sure that our neighbors know an election is coming and how they can vote. A few minutes with each person adds up to hundreds more casting a ballot with confidence and dignity!

When Detroiters show up to the polls, the state starts acting right!
