Mothering Justice We are a black woman-led, grassroots advocacy and leadership development org that inspires mamas of color to take action on US policy change.

What we believe

-Workplace policies should respect the family responsibilities of each worker
-Love defines families and every family should be recognized in the eyes of the law
-Mothers should be able to choose how and where they give birth and society should respect the needs of a nursing mother

We are activist mothers and supporters who are well-equipped to advocate for ourselves and our fami

Black Breastfeeding Week is a reminder that supporting Black mamas means supporting Black families, Black communities and Black futures.

As we close out Breastfeeding Awareness Month, we’re centering the Black mamas who deserve access to the resources, care and community they need throughout their breastfeeding journeys.

This year’s theme, “We All We Got,” reminds us of the power of showing up for one another. When Black mamas are supported, generations are nourished.

🤍 Day 1 of In Her Honor reminded us why we gather.

Last night, we came together at Detroit Institute of Arts for a powerful screening of Aftershock, followed by conversation, reflection and community centered on the realities of Black maternal health and the work still ahead.

We’re grateful to the ARIAH Foundation for collaborating with us to create this space and to Danielle Atkinson, Omari Maynard and Shawnee Benton Gibson for helping lead a conversation that centered the voices, experiences and stories that must continue to be heard.

And to everyone who showed up, shared space with us and came ready to listen, learn and reflect, thank you. This is what it looks like to honor the mamas we’ve lost while continuing to fight for the care, dignity and futures Black mamas deserve.

Day 1 may be over, but In Her Honor is just getting started.

Tonight, we continue with a sold-out A Night in Her Honor Gala, followed by In Her Honor Public Exhibition Day on Friday.

Tomorrow, we’ll gather to honor the mamas we’ve lost, celebrate their lives and legacies, and be in community around the work for maternal health justice.

Created by artist Eva Houston, Work of Love is inspired by the love, strength and stories of mothers and reflects so much of what drives the work at Mothering Justice: uplifting mamas, families, birth workers and the people who care for our communities.

We’re especially grateful to unveil Work of Love in time for In Her Honor Detroit, where we’ll come together to honor mothers lost to maternal mortality, uplift their legacies and continue pushing for a future where every mama has the care, support and respect she deserves.

Our Fibroid Awareness Month Community Conversation has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 15.
