On June 4, 1989, this poster of Gary Cooper, taken from the American western movie High Noon, was all over major cities in Poland. The poster's inscription: IT'S HIGH NOON, JUNE 4, 1989. Like in the movie, which Poles were very familiar with, the theme is to do the right thing, even if things look bleak. That day, June 4, 1989, was Election Day. Amazingly, Solidarity forced the Polish government to allow for partially free elections, being the first country in the Soviet Bloc to allow an opposition party to field candidates for 1/3 of the seats in parliament. This iconic poster encouraged Poles to vote for the Solidarity ticket, despite all odds. In all Westerns, the hero always wins. Likewise, against all odds, in that Polish election, Solidarity secured a landslide victory, and the High Noon poster became an emblem of triumph and new beginning.
4 czerwca. 37 lat temu nie było pewności, jak potoczy się historia, ale była nadzieja. I odwaga, by uwierzyć, że można zmienić rzeczywistość bez przemocy, bez krzyku, bez nienawiści.
Wolność nie jest czymś danym raz na zawsze. To raczej iskra przekazywana z pokolenia na pokolenie. Czasem płonie jasno, czasem ledwo się tli, ale wciąż potrzebuje ludzi, którzy będą jej pilnować.
Pamietajmy, ze wtedy mimo różnic potrafiono usiąść przy jednym stole. Za wolność. Za solidarność. Za tych, którzy byli przed nami. I za tych, którzy przyjdą po nas.
