Welcome aboard US Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay! We are the Workhorse of the Great Lakes and find ourselves at home in the great city of Detroit, MI. Our missions on the Lakes are about as diverse as the four seasons that you find here in Michigan. During the Fall, you'll find BRISTOL BAY on Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, or Lake Erie tending to the Aids to Navigation, or buoys. With Winter a

nd icy weather coming, we pull all of the lighted buoys out of the waterways and replace them with winter buoys. Winter finally comes and ice covers the Great Lakes. That's when the real works starts - ice breaking! Commerce never stops and large freighters need to be able to transit the Lakes and their waterways. USCGC BRISTOL BAY breaks paths through the ice primarily in the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers. Occasionally we are sent up to the Straights of Mackinaw or the St. Mary's River. If you stop on the banks of Lake St. Clair during those long Michigan winters, you'll be likely to see the hard working crew of BRISTOL BAY breaking a track for Michigan's economy. When the ice finally melts, we're back again to return the Aids to Navigation to mark the way. While Aids to Navigation and ice breaking are our primary missions, we stay busy throughout the year with law enforcement, search and rescue, and homeland security.

On Memorial Day we take time to remember and honor our shipmates who made the ultimate sacrifice. In Bristol Bay’s Deck Office there resides a small memorial honoring a shipmate who, more than 60 years ago, gave his life in to save another.

His story is not one widely known in the Coast Guard.

His name does not adorn cutters or buildings.

But his story remains, and today we honor him amongst other Coast Guardsmen who gave their lives.

SN Dennis Bauer, USCG.

His award reads:

The Secretary of the Treasury takes pride in presenting the GOLD LIFE-SAVING MEDAL posthumously to

DENNIS ROLAND BAUER, SEAMAN
UNITED STATES COAST GUARD

for service as set forth in the following citation:

"For extreme and heroic daring on the morning December 2, 1965, while serving aboard the USCGC BRAMBLE (WLB-392) when he went to the assistance of a fellow Coast Guardsman who was in danger of drowning in the cold waters adjacent to the United States Coast Guard Base, Detroit, MI. SN BAUER was unloading commissary stores on the dock when he heard a crash and saw a forklift plunge into the water about 100 feet up the dock.

The forklift struck a light pole on the dock, knocking it toward the water with its power line still energized.
BAUER and other personnel of the BRAMBLE raced to the scene, jumped down on a raft and tried to reach the man who had panicked and was in danger of drowning.

When BAUER was unable to reach the man, he dived into the frigid water and supported the nearly helpless man. In his efforts to bring the man to safety, he grasped the light pole for support, unaware that the pole's wires were still charged. BAUER apparently received a violent shock, released his hold on the man, and sank beneath the murky waters. BAUER displayed outstanding courage, initiative, and fortitude while sacrificing his own life to save the life of a shipmate.”

On Memorial Day, and every day, we are grateful for those who have made the sacrifice so that others may live.

While working a buoy in today, DC2 got to join the buoy deck crew to help remove some worn sections of chain! As part of maintaining floating Aids to Navigation, we regularly inspect and replace the chains that hold these buoys to sinkers on the lakebed.

Before a buoy goes out for the season, we make sure it’s “ship-shape” this includes installing lights, clearing solar panels, replacing faded number markings and replacing reflective retro.

In this photo SN Liberty Ward of Grand Rapids, MI climbs the Maumee Bay #10 buoy to install some new retro before it gets sent over the side.

Buoy tending is hard, dirty work. It’s important that in the moments between buoy evolutions to take time to decompress and enjoy the small things and have fun.

It’s the little moments with a tight knit crew that make serving at sea so memorable.

In the shadows of our Main Diesel Engines, we advanced the Coast Guard’s newest MK2 to E5 this evening.

MK2 John Roe was welcomed to the E5 Mess by BM2 Hanna and MK2 Gould. Congrats to MK2 on a well earned advancement!

There’s probably no more fitting a place for an MK to earn their crows!
