Inaugural "Voices & Vigil" – Montgomery for Crime Survivors Speak – Alabama,

National Crime Victims Week event 2026:
Our partners — Supreme Transitions, MAAVIS, Empowering Communities Helping Ourselves, GirlTrek, 219 @ 819 Resilient Heart, (Alabama Appleseed, the City of Montgomery Office of Violence Prevention, city officials, and policymakers) — remind us that healing is not passive. It’s active. It’s advocacy. It’s art. It’s action.

City Councilwoman Riley, thank you for being here with us tonight and for offering your voice as we begin this important work.

Every name we speak tonight carries power. Every story shared becomes part of a collective truth that demands change. And every person here is part of that change.

We remember. We honor. We speak. But we also build — a movement across this state that ensures healing is not a privilege, but a right.

Consent is about choice. About autonomy. About the ability to say yes—or no—without pressure, fear, or consequence.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we’re holding space for a deeper truth: consent is shaped by power. By who feels safe enough to speak, to set boundaries, to be heard and who doesn’t.

For Black survivors, these dynamics are often compounded by systems that minimize harm and limit protection. That’s why our conversations around consent must go further, grounded in context, community, and care.

Let’s lean into what it really means to practice consent:
• Honoring boundaries without assumption
• Recognizing how power impacts choice
• Creating spaces where “no” is respected and “yes” is freely given
• Showing up with accountability in every interaction

Consent isn’t just a conversation, it’s a culture we have to build, together.

We will not normalize this.
We will not look away.
We know this is a pattern.
We hold the children, family, and loved ones of those lost close.
And we remain committed to prevention, protection, and support.

In the wake of the tragic deaths of Dr. Cerina Fairfax, we’re holding space.

Ujima is hosting a special Office Hours session to reflect, process, and have an honest conversation about domestic violence, risk, and the responses our communities need right now.

It’s about strengthening how we show up, support, and protect one another moving forward.

If you are a professional, advocate, or community member looking for space to learn and engage, we invite you to join us.

We are grieving yet another devastating loss.

The consistency of this violence is deeply troubling. These are not isolated moments. They are part of a larger pattern we must confront.

Safety requires more than reaction. It requires prevention, support, and a commitment to protecting families and children every single day.
