WSUPD remembers Sgt Collin Rose who was killed in the line of duty. Sgt. Rose was shot while conducting an investigation on November 22, 2016, and succumbed to his injuries on November 23, 2016. WSUPD remembers his courage and sacrifice along with the lasting legacy he left upon our department and Midtown.

Update: The person of interest has been identified

Incident Summary:
A WSU student reported that on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m., she allowed an unknown male subject into her residence at Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments to use the restroom. Once inside, the suspect lured the victim into the bathroom and attempted to close the door. The suspect implied he had a knife and threatened to sexually assault her. A struggle ensued, during which the suspect physically assaulted the victim. The victim was eventually able to de-escalate the situation and convince the suspect to leave the premises. Suspect then left location and was last seen walking eastbound on W. Warren from location.

Suspect Description:
Race/Gender: Black male
Age: Approximately 20–30 years old
Height: 5'5" to 5'6"
Build: Husky (approximately 220 lbs)
Hair: Short (1" to 1.5" in length)
Eyewear: Black rectangular or square eyeglasses with a white stripe on the inside
Clothing: Light blue shirt with black print on the front. Unknown color pants but described as heavy material.
Accessories: Carrying a black backpack
Additional Information: Suspect had a strong body odor (described as sweaty)
Aliases/Names Provided: “Joshua” and “Clarence Jose”

WSUPD sends their condolences to the family of retired Captain Frank Smith. Frank served the department for 34 years and previously served in the US Marine Corps. Rest in Peace Frank, we have it from here.

National Police Week offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. National Police week runs from May 11th through May 17th.

During this week we continue to remember our fallen hero, Sergeant Collin Rose #128.

Statewide Tornado Drill Scheduled for March 19, 2025

To be ready for a tornado:

Know the difference: a tornado WATCH means conditions exist for a tornado to develop; a tornado WARNING means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.

Know the signs of an approaching tornado: dark, often greenish sky; large hail; a large, dark, low-lying cloud; and a loud roar, like a freight train.

Stay tuned to commercial radio or television broadcasts for news on changing weather conditions or approaching storms.

Develop an emergency preparedness kit with essential items such as a three-day water and food supply, a NOAA Weather Radio, important family documents, and items that satisfy unique family needs.

Identify a safe place in your home for household members and pets to gather during a tornado.

Public Notice - Active Assailant Training Exercise at A/AB
The Wayne State University Police Department (WSUPD) will conduct a scenario-based active assailant training exercise on Thursday, March 13, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Academic Administration Building, located at 5700 Cass Avenue. As a result, the building will be closed to the public and for university business on this date.
During the exercise, you may notice WSUPD vehicles with lights and sirens in the Cass and Palmer area, and Palmer Street may be intermittently closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. If you see armed officers or "injured individuals" being evacuated from the building, please note that this is part of the drill and not a real emergency.
WSUPD regularly conducts training exercises to ensure the department is prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to active assailant situations. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this important training.
