Sometimes when people arrive at the Cass Drop-In, they come empty-handed. One night last week a family with 6 children was admitted without shoes. Staff members Dave, Debbie, Colleen, Beverly and Berry pulled together to ensure that all those feet were protected. Thank you to the donors, too, who shared footwear (and to those of you who helped with school uniforms)!

Today was the first day people could walk the new Gordie Howe Bridge to Canada, AND it was the last day for one of our summer interns! A student at Rollins College in Florida but originally from Australia, we took the picture in Detroit.

17 tons of shredded paper are headed to the paper mill from Cass. Each ton saves: 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 400 kW of energy, 90 cubic feet of landfill space and 100 gallons of gasoline.

Often others ask about people experiencing homelessness in the cold and/or snow. Extreme heat is equally hard on unhoused individuals and families. Our Drop-In is meant for 195 and last night we had 295, a good many of them children. We do have central air and we are working with the City to establish cooling centers and, possibly, a standby shelter.
