Detroit May Day 2026 Held in Roosevelt Park:
On May 1, 2026, hundreds gathered on Michigan avenue at Roosevelt park to commemorate International Workers Day. This holiday extends back to the Haymarket massacre of 1886 where mass demonstrations and strikes in favor of the 8-hour day took place. In Detroit, the Central Labor Council of the AFL-CIO held a rally outside the refurbished train station. Speakers from various organized labor unions spoke representing the UAW, SEIU and others. After the rally the Moratorium NOW! Coalition, Democratic Socialist of America (DSA), Communist Party USA, and many other left and progressive organizations marched down Michigan avenue to the ICE detention and later Federal Bldg. Speakers addressed the crowd from the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), the People's Assembly of Detroit, African Bureau for Immigration and Social Affairs (ABISA) and the Detroit Union Education League (DUEL). This demonstration was part and parcel of 3,000 rallies and demonstrations across the United States and the world. (Video by Abayomi Azikiwe, Pan-African News Wire).
