Hey friends! It's been a really hard few weeks. I have been in full sandwich generation mode, as I dealt with my mom having health issues (she's on the mend) and adult children in need of some assistance and support. But, during the campaign I promised to live stream court proceedings for members of the public who had mobility issues, and cannot easily get to the courthouse to observe. We have not started that live streaming yet, as I made efforts to balance the right to privacy of individual citizens with transparency to the public. I have received a few inquiries from people who want to watch the courtroom. So, the time has now come. We will begin live streaming from courtroom 437 next week on YouTube .🙂

Street Outreach Court is one of my favorite dockets. If a person is homeless or facing housing instability, their traffic (and misdemeanor tickets heard in traffic court) likely qualify them for a referral to Street outreach court. We all know that traffic tickets can create a vicious cycle causing fines and fees to pile up. This can make getting a valid license feel nearly impossible. Through this program, people can get all of their tickets dismissed by completing tasks meant purely to benefit them, including job training, education training, and housing placement. And there are social workers and attorneys helping them navigate the entire process. Graduation day allows us to hear from people about struggles they have overcome and how the program has helped. I get to meet some really strong and beautiful souls who have had to navigate some really tough times. I won't post people's photos without permission. But if you'd like to know more about Street Democracy, the program that has this project, you can find more information here.

The coolest thing happened when I was out the other night. A man walked up to me and said "Hey! I know you! You're my judge; I was just in your courtroom!" I said, "Oh wow! Did we take good care of you?". He answered, "Yes, you did!" He gave me a hug and then brought over his friend who I happened to know too. I love being at 36th District Court, in my community. It truly is The People's Court. ❤️

I watched Straw the other day. In my opinion, anyone who sits in a position of power over other people or makes decisions that impact a person's life should watch this movie. It is a really good reminder that the decision you make or action you take may seem small or insignificant to you, but could be extremely important in the life of the person you impact. It may just be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

If you see me today just know I am running on 3 hours of sleep and energy drinks because my child needed money for "emergency breakfast" while studying for finals and was unable to wait for her normal allowance payout time. 🥴😩😭

We won! There has been so much to process in the last couple of days that I actually found myself just unable to communicate. Thank you, for every word of support, for every dollar donated, for every minute of your time. And thank you for your votes! It is so humbling to have almost 100,000 people place their faith and trust in me. I promise to do right by you everyday. I promise to do my absolute best to ensure justice in every case before me at the 36th District Court, no matter the issue. From the beginning, this was about all of us, not just me. When justice is administered with mercy, compassion, and understanding, we all win. And when we fall short of that, we all lose. I will keep working hard to improve our system, ensure that it works for everyone as it should, and continue to earn your confidence. Thank you Detroit!
