Consul General Kishimori Visits FANUC America

On Wednesday, May 20, Consul General Kishimori visited FANUC America with a delegation including Director Manabu Murakami of the Second North America Division at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who is currently visiting the United States. FANUC America is headquartered in Michigan and it is a subsidiary of FANUC Corporation, providing technical support and services for robotics across North and South America. This was Consul General Kishimori’s second visit to the company.

During the visit, they toured the headquarters in Rochester Hills under the guidance of Senior Technical Engineer, Mr. Takahiro Kogure, and Manager of Japanese Customers Support, Ms. Memi Noda. They also toured two manufacturing facilities. This visit further deepened their understanding of the company’s advanced technological capabilities, including its precisely designed industrial robots and its solutions for automating work in factories and facilities.

5月20日(水)、岸守総領事および訪米中の村上北米第二課長一行は、ファナック・アメリカの招きを受け、ミシガン州に拠点を置く同社を訪問しました。ファナック株式会社の子会社であるファナック・アメリカは、北米および南米におけるロボットの技術サポートやサービスを提供しています。岸守総領事にとっては、今回が2回目の訪問となりました。

本訪問では、上級技術エンジニアの小暮氏および日本顧客サポートマネージャーの野田氏の案内により、ロチェスター・ヒルズに所在する本社において展示会を見学したほか、2つの工場施設を視察しました。同社の緻密な設計を備えた産業用ロボットや、工場・施設における作業の自動化へのソリューションを提供する技術力の高さへの理解をさらに深めました。

Consul General Kishimori Attends Annual Gala hosted by the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce

On Saturday, May 16, Consul General Kishimori attended an annual gala hosted by the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APACC) at the invitation of Board of Directors, Mr. Tim Ha and Ms. Grace Lee. The gala was held as part of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and aimed to recognize the contributions of the AAPI business community in the State of Michigan.

At the gala, Consul General Kishimori had the opportunity to reconnect and exchange words with Michigan State Representative Ranjeev Puri, Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang, Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD) President Shin Sasaki, Vice President Atuya Kato of JBSD, President Keita Moritsu of JBSD Foundation, Vice President Hiroshi Kurumisawa of Comerica Bank and his wife, Mrs. Akemi Kurumisawa, as well as President Collin Shaw of MEMA.

The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit continues to value its relationship with APACC and looks forward to further strengthening collaboration with the Japanese business community based in Michigan.

5月16日(土)、岸守総領事は、アジア太平洋系米国人商工会議所(APACC)の取締役会のハ氏およびリー氏の招待を受け、同会議所主催の年次祝祭に出席しました。同祝祭はアジア・太平洋諸島系アメリカ人(AAPI)文化遺産月間の一環として開催され、ミシガン州におけるAAPIビジネスコミュニティの貢献を称えることを目的としたイベントです。

同イベントにおいて、岸守総領事は、プリ・ミシガン州下院院内総務、チャン・ミシガン州上院議員ご夫妻をはじめ、デトロイト日本商工会(JBSD)の佐々木会頭および加藤副会頭、JBSD基金の森津理事長、フィフス・サード銀行の楜澤氏と明美夫人、さらにMEMAのショウ総裁と再会し、言葉を交わしました。

在デトロイト日本国総領事館としては、今後も引き続きAPACCとの関係を大切にし、ミシガン州に拠点を置く日系企業コミュニティと連携を一層深めてまいります。

Consul General Kishimori Attends Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Celebration Show at Detroit Institute of Arts

On Saturday, May 16, Consul General Kishimori attended, as a guest of honor, the annual Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Celebration Show held at the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA). Ms. Sharon Dow, Community Engagement Chair for the Friends of Asian Arts and Cultures at the DIA, invited Consul General Kishimori. In the United States, May is designated as AAPI Heritage Month, and in celebration of this month, the DIA has been hosting a series of programs showcasing the diverse cultures of AAPI communities from May 2 through June 1.

At the event, opening remarks were delivered by Deputy Director Judith Dolkart of the DIA, Consul General Kishimori, State Senator Rosemary Bayer, and Curator Katherine Kasdorf of the DIA. The program continued with a variety of performances representing AAPI cultures, including taiko drumming by the Great Lakes Taiko Center. Prior to the event, an exhibition of artwork by AAPI artists was also held, where Consul General Kishimori viewed works by woodblock print artist Nobuko Yamazaki and illustrator Mino Watanabe, among others.

The event provided a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the voices and stories of the AAPI community in Michigan, further fostering mutual understanding and expanding cultural exchange among attendees.

5月16日(土)、岸守総領事は、デトロイト美術館(DIA)アジア美術文化友の会のドウ理事の招待を受け、DIAで年次開催されるアジア・太平洋諸島系アメリカ人(AAPI)「セレブレーション・ショー」に来賓として出席しました。アメリカでは毎年5月がAAPI文化遺産月間とされており、デトロイト美術館ではこれを祝い、AAPIの多様な文化に根差したプログラムが5月2日から6月1日まで実施されています。

同イベントでは、ドールカート副館長をはじめ、岸守総領事、ベイヤー州上院議員、カサドルフ・キュレーターが祝辞を述べました。続いて、五大湖太鼓センターによる太鼓演奏など、AAPI文化を代表する多彩なパフォーマンスが披露されました。さらに、イベント開始前にはAAPIアーティストによる芸術作品展示も行われ、岸守総領事は木版画家の山﨑信子氏やイラストレーターのワタナベミノ氏らの作品を鑑賞しました。

本イベントは、ミシガン州AAPIコミュニティの声とストーリーを称える特別で有意義な機会となり、参加者の相互理解と文化交流のさらなる広がりが感じられるものとなりました。

Consul General Kishimori Enjoys the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess performed by the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance

On Saturday, May 15, Consul General Kishimori, at the invitation of Maestro Keitaro Harada of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, attended a performance of George Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess, hosted by the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA).

This work represents American opera that blends a variety of musical styles. For this occasion, it was performed in a concert format, and Consul General Kishimori enjoyed its fascinating music.

In addition, at the concert, Consul General Kishimori had the opportunity to reunite with DPAA President and CEO Patrick Nugent, Lieutenant General Donna Shipton of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, as well as three personnel seconded from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and Japan’s Ministry of Defense.

5月15日(金)、岸守総領事は、デイトン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団のマエストロ・原田慶太楼氏の招待を受け、デイトン・パフォーミング・アーツ・アライアンス(DPAA)主催のジョージ・ガーシュウィン作曲によるオペラ「ポーギーとベス」を鑑賞しました。

同作品は多様な音楽スタイルが融合したアメリカを代表するオペラです。今回はコンサート形式にて上演され、岸守総領事は、その魅力あふれる楽曲を堪能しました。

また、岸守総領事は同公演において、DPAAのニューゲン社長をはじめ、ライト・パターソン空軍基地司令官のシップトン中将、さらに日本の航空自衛隊および防衛省から出向中の方々とも再会を果たしました。

Consul General Kishimori Visits the International Peace Museum in Dayton

On Friday, May 15, Consul General Kishimori visited the International Peace Museum in Dayton, Ohio. This marked his second visit this year, and he once again received a warm welcome from Executive Director Alice Young-Basora.

On the exterior wall near the museum, an art piece displays the phrase: “Peace is a verb. First to be sought within, then to be actively shared with others.” As this message suggests, the museum is dedicated to promoting peace and compassion through education, dialogue, and collaboration with others.

The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit looks forward to further strengthening exchanges between Japan and the United States through exhibitions and events at the International Peace Museum.

5月15日(金)、岸守総領事は、オハイオ州にあるデイトン平和博物館を訪問しました。本年に入り2度目の訪問となり、今回もヤング=バソラ館長の温かい歓迎を受けました。

博物館近くの外壁には、「Peace is a verb. First to be sought within, then to be actively shared with others. (平和とは動詞である。まず自分自身の中に探し求め、そしてそれを他者と積極的に共有していくもの。) 」とのアート作品が描かれています。この言葉が示す通り、同博物館は教育や他者との対話・コラボレーションを通じて、平和や思いやりの促進に取り組んでいます。

在デトロイト日本国総領事館は、今後もデイトン平和博物館における展示やイベントを通じ、日米間の交流が一層深まることを期待しています。

Consul General Kishimori Attends Friends of Findlay Annual Meeting

On Thursday, May 14, Consul General Kishimori attended the “Friends of Findlay” annual meeting, held in Findlay, Ohio, at the invitation of President Masaru (Mark) Yamamoto of Friends of Findlay.

Friends of Findlay aims to promote cultural exchange between Japan and the United States as one of its missions and is committed to building cooperative relationships with the City of Findlay and the surrounding communities. At the event, remarks were delivered by Mayor Christina Muryn of Findlay, Mayor Lee Wilkinson of Tiffin, Ohio State Representative, Ty Mathews, and Consul General Kishimori.

The event was also attended by President Emeritus Katherine Fell of the University of Findlay, faculty members from the university’s Japanese program, and representatives from eleven Japanese companies based in Ohio that are members of Friends of Findlay. The event provided an opportunity to reaffirm connections with the people of the Findlay region.

5月14日(木)、岸守総領事は、「フレンズ・オブ・フィンドレー」の山本会長の招待を受け、オハイオ州フィンドレー市で開催された「フレンズ・オブ・フィンドレー」年次ミーティングに出席しました。

「フレンズ・オブ・フィンドレー」は、日米間の文化交流の促進をミッションの1つに掲げ、フィンドレー市および周辺地域との協力的な関係の構築に注力しています。同イベントでは、マーン・フィンドレー市長やウィルキンソン・ティフィン市長、マシュー・オハイオ州下院議員に加え、岸守総領事が挨拶を行いました。

同イベントには、フェル・フィンドレー大学名誉学長やフィンドレー大学日本語学科の関係者、オハイオ州に拠点を置く「フレンズ・オブ・フィンドレー」加盟の日系企業11社の代表者らが出席し、フィンドレー地域の方々とのつながりを改めて確認する機会となりました。

Consul General Kishimori Attends the 59th Nakama no Kai

On Tuesday, May 12, Consul General Kishimori attended the 59th “Nakama no Kai” gathering hosted by Bowling Green State University in Ohio, at the invitation of Professor Emeritus Akiko Kawano Jones. The event was attended by University President Rodney Rogers and his spouse, Dean Ellen Schendel of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dean Jennifer Percival of the College of Business, among others.

At the event, President Tsunehiro Takada of Plotwork USA, which operates a U.S. sales office in Michigan and a factory in Ohio, delivered a lecture titled Plotwork’s “Expansion into the U.S. and Our (Its) Mission.” He discussed the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Japan and the expansion of Japanese SMEs into the Midwest region. Following the lecture, a networking session was held among participating representatives from Japanese companies and university affiliates.

5月12日(火)、岸守総領事は、オハイオ州にあるボーリング・グリーン州立大学の川野教授の招待により、同大学主催の第59回「仲間の会」に参加しました。同会には、ロジャース学長夫妻をはじめ、シェンデル教養・科学学部長、パーシヴァル・ビジネス学部長らが出席しました。

同会では、ミシガン州に米国営業所、オハイオ州に工場を構えるプロトワークUSAの高田社長が、「Plotworkのアメリカ進出とその使命」と題して講演を行い、日本における中小企業の役割や、日系中小企業の中西部地域への進出について説明しました。講演後には、参加した日系企業関係者および大学関係者によるネットワーキングが行われました。
