A new chapter is underway in Northville.

County Executive Warren C. Evans joined local leaders and community members to celebrate the opening of the new riverfront park at The Downs, a major milestone in the transformation of the former Northville Downs racetrack.

What was once a longtime racing destination is becoming a vibrant community space with new housing, public amenities, and improved access to the Rouge River.

The project also restores a section of the Rouge River that had been hidden for more than 60 years, reconnecting residents with a valuable natural resource. Check the comments to watch the entire WXYZ-TV Channel 7 story.

Statement from Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans regarding Juneteenth

Juneteenth is not so much a celebration of our freedom as it is a grim reminder of why we had to be set free from an unconscionable atrocity that never should have been allowed to exist in the first place.

Throughout history, Black people have demonstrated a remarkable determination to rise and thrive above and despite all that we have been forced to endure. We have become masters of transforming centuries of pain and struggle into unique expressions of art and music that have uplifted not only this country but the entire world. Detroit’s singular artistic and musical contributions stand as unique witness to that ability.

The way in which we choose to commemorate Juneteenth is to honor the legacy of struggle and overcoming that has gotten us this far. It is that same legacy which will sustain us through the storms to come.
