Wayne County Public Health has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in an Out-Wayne County resident in 2026. Mosquito season is not over, and WNV activity in Michigan typically peaks in late August and early September.

Take simple steps to protect yourself and your family:
• Use EPA-registered insect repellent
• Limit time outdoors at dawn and dusk
• Wear long sleeves, pants and socks
• Empty standing water around your home
• Repair window and door screens

Most people infected with WNV have no symptoms, but about 1 in 5 may develop symptoms. In rare cases, WNV can cause serious illness. Take action today to prevent mosquito bites and help protect your family from West Nile virus. Check our comments for more!

A new place to walk, exercise, play pickleball or simply spend some time outside is coming to Southgate.

Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans recently visited the Southgate Tower redevelopment, where the former Security Bank Tower is being transformed into 216 apartments.

Wayne County invested $5 million to support a new publicly accessible park and pedestrian bridge at the development. The park will include pickleball courts, putting greens, walking paths, fitness stations and a pavilion.

Once complete, these new amenities will be available to Southgate Tower residents, nearby Fountain Park Apartments and the surrounding neighborhoods.
