Today, June 11, 2026, the Devens Fire Department officially upgraded its EMS service to the Paramedic level.
This effort began more than a year ago following the closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer. For many years, the Devens Fire Department relied on mutual aid partners to provide paramedic-level care to those who live and work in Devens.
Through the Department of Public Health (DPH) grant funding, DFD sponsored five members to attend paramedic training. In addition, the department began hiring Firefighter/Paramedics with the goal of elevating our level of service. We are proud to announce that this goal has now been achieved. The Devens Fire Department will provide patients with the highest level of pre-hospital care available, delivered directly by our personnel.

Today, members of the Devens Fire Department trained with the Correctional Officers from the Federal Medical Center Devens. On occasions correctional officers need to wear air packs if conditions in a cell block require it. The FBOP officers were able to train with our firefighters on how to operate in a smoke filled room and corridor. Just another example of partnering for success.

Today, members of the Devens Fire Department traveled to Boston to pay their respects to fallen Firefighter Robert “BK” Kilduff Jr.

We stand alongside our brothers and sisters in the fire service as we honor his life, service, and sacrifice.

Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.

At 10:07 PM members of the Devens Fire Department were dispatched to 45 Independence Drive, Devens Recycling for a report of fire in the pile of building materials inside the building. Units responded and investigated. Captain Wayland identified heavy smoke and called for the Working Fire Assignment bringing Mutual Aid to the fire scene and cover companies to protect Devens. On arrival, command was transferred to Captain Whittier. Suppression was initiated until approximately 1:30 AM when the fire was placed under control. All units were back in service by 2:30 AM. Thanks to our Mutual Aid partners, Ayer Fire Department, Shirley Fire Department, Leominster Fire Department, Lunenburg Fire Department, Groton Fire Department, Harvard Fire Department, Littleton Fire Department and Bolton Fire Department.

Devens Fire Department is hosting 60 + fire personnel from all over New England for a class on Fire Prevention for the Movie Industry. The class includes code training from Matt Murray from the Department of Fire Services. The team from Ocean State Pyrotechnics is training on movie special effects. A tour of New England Studios culminates the training day.

For the last 4 days, Firefighter Jon Gallardo, Firefighter Ammie Boucher and Lieutenant Cory Farrar took the Rope Rescue Technician course from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Three of these days had temps in the 90 degree range making rope rescues even more difficult. Congratulations and thank you to these firefighters for spending 4 days expanding their training.

Deven’s firefighters are currently working to extinguish fire in a landscape trailer. Fire is under control and Ayer Ambulance is supporting us by assessing a member of the landscape crew.

Your strength, sacrifice, compassion, and dedication do not go unnoticed. Whether you’re answering calls for help or caring for your families at home, you continue to lead with courage every single day.

It is with deep sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and members of the Massachusetts State Police on the line-of-duty death of Trooper Kevin Trainor.

On behalf of all the members of the department, we are keeping everyone affected in our thoughts during this difficult time.

The Massachusetts State Police announce the line-of-duty death of Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, who was senselessly killed this morning by a wrong-way driver.

At the conclusion of his public safety detail shortly before 2 a.m., Trooper Trainor began his commute home. Minutes later, 911 received a call reporting a wrong-way driver traveling South on Route 1 North in Lynnfield. Several dedicated Troopers converged on the area and located the vehicle traveling the wrong way at 2:03 a.m. One minute later, at 2:04 a.m., the vehicle collided with Trooper Trainor’s cruiser.

While nothing will ever repair the pain we feel today, we make a solemn promise to never forget Trooper Trainor and his service to the Commonwealth. Kevin served as a Corrections Officer in Essex County before joining the State Police as a member of the 88th Recruit Training Troop. In his decorated career, he mentored new Troopers as a Field Training Officer or “Trooper Coach,” earned a place on the prestigious Troop Community Action Team, set the standard for professionalism, and patrolled our roads with a singular focus: keeping the people of this Commonwealth safe.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Trooper Trainor’s classmates have shared stories of his genuine care and concern for others. As one person put it, “he was the guy you wanted as your backup.”

Colonel Noble said in his remarks this afternoon, “Make no mistake: Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning. His courage – his commitment to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and put his life on the line – prevented an even greater tragedy. He will be remembered as a hero.”

We deeply appreciate the outpouring of support from our Governor, the Secretary of Public Safety, and friends in Massachusetts and across the country. We will remember and honor this extraordinary man, son, fiancée, and friend who gave his life for others.
