CLINTON – Wednesday, while doing a follow-up check on manure application just north of Clinton, the DNR found manure in a tributary of Silver Creek flowing into Silver Creek and about three miles to the Mississippi River.

STATE FUNDING OPEN FOR WATER QUALITY COVER CROPS.
Iowa farmers can now apply for statewide funding to help with the cost of planting fall cover crops. Farmers new to plantling cover crops would receive $25/ac and past cover crop users could receive $15/ac. The maximum acres covered is 160 acres. Farmers can submit applicaltions now through their local Soil & Water Conservation District office. Funds for first time cover crop users is available NOW. Previous users of cover crops can make a request NOW, but funds will not be available until July 30, 2018. Last fall Clinton County farmers completed 4,180 acres of cover crops.

The Clinton County Soil & Water Conservation District is offering a local $1,000.00 scholarship to one high school senior planning to further his/her education in an Agriculture or Natural Resources field of study. The scholarship is to be used for the first year of education on a college level. Applicants are required to reside in Clinton County and be pursuing programs of study in the field of Agriculture or natural Resources. Leadership, character, self-motivation, and scholastic achievement will be the basis of the scholarship award. Applications, may be obtained from their highschool guidance counselor or the Clinton Soil & Water Consrvation District office. Contact Cindy Green at: [email protected]. Completed applications should be sent to the Clinton Soil & Water Conservation District office located at 1212 17th Avenue, DeWitt, IA. The deadline for submitting applications is March 30, 2018.

Jack Boyer, CDI Region 7 Director and Tama Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioner, interseeded a radish, annual ryegrass and clover cover crop mix into his corn in the Spring of 2016.

AMES, Iowa – Iowans who want to protect their ash trees have options for a brief time this spring. However, the options apply only to valuable and healthy ash trees within 15 miles of a known infestation of emerald ash borer. The emerald ash borer has been detected in 45 counties in Iowa.
