Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Supporters,
The story of our region is, at its heart, the story of its people, and the Hispanic community has long been an essential part of that story. In Jamestown, Dunkirk, and throughout Chautauqua County, Hispanic families have helped shape neighborhoods, businesses, churches, schools, and the cultural life of Western New York for well over a century.
Hispanic migration to this region dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when individuals and families from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Cuba, and countries throughout Central and South America came seeking opportunity, stability, and the promise of the American Dream. Many were drawn by work in agriculture, manufacturing, food processing, railroads, and the once-thriving furniture industry that helped build Jamestown. Over time, Puerto Rican families in particular established deep roots in both Jamestown and Dunkirk, contributing significantly to the workforce, opening small businesses, serving in the armed forces, and becoming leaders in faith communities, education, healthcare, and civic life.
Today, the Hispanic population remains one of the most vibrant and growing communities in the county. Hispanic-owned businesses contribute to the local economy. Cultural traditions, including music, dance, art, language, and cuisine, enrich community life. Generations of families have strengthened our schools, nonprofits, and public institutions. Their resilience, entrepreneurship, and commitment to family remain central to the character of our region.
At the forefront of preserving this legacy and supporting future generations is the Hispanic Community Council of Chautauqua County (HCCC). As a volunteer-led, community-driven organization, HCCC is dedicated to promoting the cultural heritage, history, and ongoing contributions of Hispanics in Jamestown, Dunkirk, and throughout Chautauqua County.
While our mission centers on uplifting and celebrating the Hispanic community, our service extends to anyone in need. We believe in building bridges, not barriers. Whether assisting families in crisis, connecting individuals to resources, supporting youth initiatives, or collaborating with other community organizations, HCCC works to strengthen the entire community, regardless of background or ethnicity.
HCCC depends entirely on charitable contributions and community support to carry out its mission. Over the past year alone, the Council has sponsored and collaborated with numerous arts and cultural institutions to bring multiple events and programs to Jamestown, Dunkirk, and surrounding areas, including cultural celebrations, educational forums, artistic performances, and heritage initiatives that highlight the richness of Hispanic traditions while fostering unity across cultures.
In addition, HCCC is leading a historic collaboration with the Eastside YMCA on a community-based project designed to preserve and document the stories of local Hispanics, past and present, ensuring that the sacrifices, achievements, and lived experiences of Hispanic families in our region are remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
This important work cannot continue without your help.
