WYLIE RD TRAFFIC CONCERNS:

Dexter Township is aware of residents' concerns regarding increased traffic on Wylie Road resulting from the Island Lake Road construction project.

We understand that the additional traffic has created challenges for residents, including increased dust, higher traffic volumes, and concerns about speeding and unsafe driving. We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to contact the Township and share their experiences.

While Dexter Township does not have jurisdiction over county roads, including Wylie Road, we take residents' concerns seriously and have communicated them to the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. We will continue to share feedback and concerns received from the community with the appropriate agencies.

Road maintenance, traffic control measures, detours, road closures, and dust control are managed by the WCRC. For questions regarding the detour, roadway maintenance, or dust control, residents are encouraged to contact the Washtenaw County Road Commission directly at 734-761-1500.

The Sheriff's Office is aware of speeding and reckless driving concerns reported by residents and has increased patrols as a result. For immediate traffic safety concerns, please contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office at 734-971-8400.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of Wylie Road residents while this temporary detour remains in place and will continue to communicate concerns received from the community to the appropriate agencies.

In 2026, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC), in partnership with the City of Dexter, will begin improvements to the Island Lake Road and Dexter Main Street Corridor in Scio Township.

Common Recycling Mistakes (and how to avoid them):

- The #1 Recycling contaminate is THIN PLASTICS. This includes bagged recycling, grocery bags, plastic tarps, and bubble wrap. To avoid this mistake, thoroughly check cardboard boxes for contaminants and NEVER bag recyclables.

- Always be sure to RINSE out food and cosmetic products from bottles before recycling

- Only recycle GLASS in designated glass drop off bins, separated by color. Place these items in a separate paper bag to bring to recycling drop off bins only (never curbside)

- Always BREAK DOWN any cardboard boxes or bulky items before recycling

- Check out the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority website to ensure you know how to recycle right!

2026 Countywide Sealcoat Program May 20, 2026

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is planning to invest approximately $1.2 million to sealcoat around 26 lane miles of pavement throughout Washtenaw County during the 2026 construction season.
Funding is provided by the Four-Year Countywide Roads and Non-Motorized Millage, along with support from the Michigan Transportation Fund (MTF).
Sealcoating is a proven method to protect our roads from daily wear—whether from traffic, sun exposure, or Michigan’s challenging freeze-thaw cycles. This process is applied to roads that are currently in good or fair condition to help extend their lifespan and minimize costly repairs in the future.
“Sealcoating is more than just a surface fix—it is a long-term investment in our county infrastructure that helps preserve roads and keep maintenance costs down,” explained Ken Harris, WCRC Superintendent of Maintenance.
Seal coating involves two main steps:
• Chip seal: First, a thin layer of liquid asphalt is applied to the road surface, followed by small stones that are pressed into place for added durability.
• Fog seal: Next, a second layer of asphalt is sprayed over the chip-sealed surface to lock in the stones. Final pavement markings are added after the fog seal has fully cured.

Work is scheduled to begin in June 2026, weather permitting. Throughout the seal coating process, roads will remain open. However, drivers are encouraged to follow the posted 35 mph advisory speed to avoid damage from loose stones and uncured asphalt.
The fog seal typically needs a few hours to cure—so please do not drive on roads that have just been sealed until they are officially reopened. If you encounter flaggers or pilot vehicles, please follow their instructions carefully and remain alert about changing road conditions.
Below you will find the list of project locations, expected traffic impacts, and the tentative schedule.
Have questions about the program, contact Ken Harris, Superintendent of Maintenance, at (734) 327-6696, or via email at [email protected].

Location: McGregor Rd between the Dexter Pinckney Rd & the Township Line
Traffic Impact: Lane restrictions
Timeline (Chip & Seal): June 2-3
Timeline (Fog Seal): June 25-26
