{Life Safety} Day 5

WHAT a week…and what a way to end it with an ABSOLUTE BANG!

Dexter Parks & Recreation provided the kids with an incredible morning of learning!

We started with a scavenger hunt (because ya know, team building) and then how to do safe water rescue techniques! We ended our training with a diving contest against the lifeguards (your friendly EMS people won that by a landslide) and then just playing in the water!

We are so blessed as a community to have organizations and people WANT to invest time into these kids. All week long they have been taught vital skills that may not only save their lives, but someone else’s as well. We have tried to pack as much as we could in one week, and we know that if any of these kids were faced with an emergency they would be able to use what they’ve been taught, to make a difference.

We hope your kids have had fun and learned lots, but most of all, we hope they have felt valued and loved.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts! We have had a blast!

{Life Safety} Day 4

Today was a BUSY day…

The little kids got a visit from Michael Collins from the Missouri Department of Conservation to play with bear p**p (our personal favorite), listen to the sound of a rattlesnake rattle, touch a real black bear fur, learn what to do if they are lost in the woods and do the “Ice Bucket” challenge to demonstrate how fast hypothermia can creep in.

The big kids class got to use the skills they learned yesterday and escape a trunk (they were supervised of course) as well as hiking, hypothermia and wildlife safety with Mr. Collins.

We also had a visit from our Emergency Management Director, Andrew Bohnert who taught them about storm and flood safety, and we got to see what 40 MPH straight line winds feel like. 💨 Whoah!

We wrapped the day up with the last day in the classroom with our, VERY competitive, game of charades…shout out to the “Surfer Dudes” for taking their team to victory. (Alpha Dawgs, we got ‘em next year) 😉

We will see everyone at the pool tomorrow at 10:30!

{Life Safety} Day 3️⃣

Today the little kids learned self defense with Ray Carrillo from Carrillo Marshal Arts. We were blown away by the amount of knowledge these kids took away today. We are so thankful for people in the community who donate time to our kids this week.

The big kids learned about serious stuff today too. We had some very informative discussions with Corporal Venneda with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and his assistant presenter (and our own StoCo trooper) Sgt Cooksey.

We learned about “stranger danger”, what to do if you get tied up and stuck in a trunk. (I know right?) And we had some Q&A on what else they could do if they were ever kidnapped.

Sometimes learning stuff like this is scary, but imagine how scary it would be if it happened…and you didn’t know what to do?

We are SO proud of each one of you today for being SO brave!

See you all tomorrow!!!

{Life Safety} Day ✌🏻

🔥🚒🧯

Today was fire safety day, and well, let’s just say it was pretty “realitistic” when our FAKE smoke set off the REAL fire alarms at the station. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Today we learned about smoke detectors, how to stop drop and roll, how important it is to have a safe fire escape plan, how to stay low…not hide…and BE LOUD (we really got that one down) in our house fire simulation room. (Hence the “fake smoke”)

Lots of fun was had by all, but more importantly we learned a LOT about what to do in case of a fire emergency.

Special thanks to Chief Bell from Bloomfield Fire for presenting and teaching information and to firefighters Emilee Forshee, Jordan Adams and Steven Cummins (all who work full time for SCAD) for dragging all your fire gear in and teaching the kids what all it does!

Today was a BIG day…and we are SO glad you came.

See you all tomorrow!

{Life Safety} Day ☝🏻:

EMS Day! Everyone got a tour of the station and an ambulance, we did some “siren testing”, learned CPR and learned to work together!

A big part of being a “rescuer” of any type is learning to work together and communicate. These kids got a few lessons in communication today, from learning how to “untangle” themselves to a mean game of charades.

Once again, we are so thankful you all let your kids hang out and spend time with us! Life Safety kids are the coolest 😎

We can’t WAIT to see you all again tomorrow!

Last Wednesday, the HSRT team participated in “Swift Water Rescue Training” on Current River in Van Buren.

SCAD, along with Cape Girardeau Fire, Jackson Fire and Sikeston DPS, trained on rescuing and recovering victims from swift water as well as embankment training with rope throw techniques. HSRT focuses their trainings on a vast amount of specific rescues and response to potential critical situations for our region.

SCAD is proud to be a part of this team and proud to bring knowledge and training back to our area.

“Learning is knowledge and knowledge is power.”

Our damage survey team found EF-2 tornado damage in Dexter, MO. Here are the details and summary page for Saturday's event: https://w2.weather.gov/pah/jul1021svr

Also, this was the first EF-2 or stronger tornado in the month of July since 1971 across our 58 county forecast area!

07/11/2021

As most of you are aware by now, our community was hit with some significant weather last night. NWS will be here today to determine if in fact it was a tornado. Stoddard County EMA will be posting updates and information on details of the storm, clean up efforts and restoration of public works systems.

Stoddard County Ambulance would like to extend a very special thank you to South Scott Ambulance District, Medic One, Butler County Ambulance and New Madrid County Ambulance for mutual aid last night. There were no reported storm related injuries at this time, but Southeast Health of Dexter was impacted and patients had to be evacuated last night.

We are a blessed community to have so many people come together and work tirelessly into the night to protect and asssit each other in anyway needed. We are shaken by the devastation to parts of our community , but we are thankful we all still have each other.

Stoddard County Ambulance District Staff and Board of Directors would like to wish everyone a SAFE and happy 4th of July.

Here are a few Independence Day reminders when shooting fireworks:

-Always use fireworks outside.
-Keep fireworks away from brush, leaves and any flammable substances.
-Have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents.
-Do not point fireworks at anyone, even as a joke.
-Light one firework at a time.
-Never light something in a container.
-Never re-light a firework that’s a dud or that previously malfunctioned.
-Kids should not play with fireworks.
**Children ages 10 to 14 have the highest rate of fireworks injury, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report, with more than one-third of the victims of fireworks injuries under age 15**
-Don’t play with fireworks when you’re impaired.

And as always, we’re here if you need us.

Stay safe!

Cold air funnels possible today. If you see elevated funnel clouds, be sure and take photos to send our way. These cold air funnels typically stay elevated, however on the rare occurrence that they touch down, they only cause minor damage. Below is the advisory message published from the National Weather Service.

There have been reports of cold air funnels today. These cold air funnels are developing underneath a few showers that are moving across the area. Underneath these showers...spinning columns of air that look like tornadoes may continue to develop. These funnels usually are very brief and rarely touch the ground. If these funnels do touch down...they most likely will not cause damage to life or property.

Cold air funnels are due to very cool air aloft...warm moist air near the ground...and are usually in association with a strong area of low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Due to
little or no wind shear...they are usually weak and very brief.

Hey all! It’s National CPR & AED awareness week!

Stoddard County Ambulance District instructors have taught THOUSANDS of people CPR right here in this county. Our schools are saturated with kids who are certified in CPR & AED. They always amaze us with their eagerness to learn it and fill us with pride knowing if the situation arose, they would be calm and able to follow through with the instructions we’ve taught.

It's not scary to learn CPR and AED, what's scary is needing to know how to do it, and not having the training. If you and your small group, church group, youth group, poker group, painting group, biker group ANY group would like to schedule a class, let us know! Knowledge is power...💪🏻❤️

A wise surgeon once said “It’s a beautiful day to save lives”...ok, maybe that was Derek Sheperd, but either way we dig it.

Enjoy this beautiful holiday weekend, but remember.

1. Watch for yard sale traffic along Highway 25, and give yourself a little extra time traveling.
2. Wear your seat belt.
3. Wear your sunscreen.
4. If you need us, we’ll be there.

Have a great Memorial Day!

We had a special guest tonight at our monthly staff meeting.

Dakota (Felecia Harwood) came and taught an amazing class on how we can better understand and care for patients on the Autism spectrum.

Not only did Dakota plan and teach a very informative class, but he did it all while being on the Autism spectrum himself. We appreciate him coming and giving such a great presentation and we appreciate his Momma for sharing her amazing son with us.

Learning creates knowledge, and knowledge is power. 🧩💪🏻
