Native American Heritage Day is an opportunity to seek out Indigenous stories, learn about Native cultures and practices, and appreciate the richness that Indigenous people bring to our diverse country.

North America contains the traditional homelands of diverse Indigenous peoples. Each Tribe has distinctive dress, cultural practices, traditional tools and crafts, recipes, music, games and artwork.

Interior programs, partnerships and public lands preserve and share the stories and heritage of Indigenous people.

Our Milky Way Galaxy 🌌 rises above the other worldly landscape that is Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The terraces are formed when water ascends through the ancient limestone deposits of the area. The results are striking and unique. They invoke a landscape that resembles a cave turned inside out, with its delicate features exposed for all to see. The flowing waters spill across the surface to sculpt magnificent travertine limestone terraces. ✨
This photo was taken with my recent Yellowstone Forever Night Sky Workshop. I had a nice small group of like-minded photographers, and we had such a fun time capturing this spot at night! I am planning on offering this workshop again next summer. Stay tuned for future workshop announcements and other fun events by signing up for my emails, link in the comments below.

HIDDEN LAKE TRAIL, GLACIER PARK.
We were hiking on the Hidden Lake Trail when this mountain goat stepped into the perfect spot for a photo! We were only about 20 yards from the Hidden Lake Overlook, with Bearhat Mountain dominating the skyline. Notice that his horn is broken. It more than likely broke off during a fall, whether it was a mishap, or a fall during a fight with another male during the autumn mating season. The Hidden Lake Trail is located on Logan Pass, and is one of the most popular and scenic hikes in Glacier Park. It's also a great place to see mountain goats! (News Release) On Tuesday, March 7, a Yellowstone National Park wildlife biologist on a radio telemetry flight observed the first grizzly bear of 2023 to emerge from hibernation. The adult bear, estimated at 300-350 pounds, was seen near the remains of a bison carcass in Pelican Valley, in the central-eastern part of the park.

The first bear sighting of 2022 also occurred on March 7.

Male grizzlies come out of hibernation in early March. Females with cubs emerge in April and early May. When bears emerge from hibernation, they look for food and often feed on elk and bison that died over the winter. Sometimes, bears will react aggressively to encounters with people when feeding on carcasses.

“Spring visitors skiing, snowshoeing, or hiking in Yellowstone National Park are reminded to carry bear spray and be especially alert for bears near carcasses and areas with early spring green-up. These are the first foods sought out by grizzlies after emerging from hibernations,” said Kerry Gunther, the park's bear management biologist.

All of Yellowstone National Park is bear country: from the deepest backcountry to the boardwalks around Old Faithful. The park restricts certain visitor activities in locations where there is a high density of bears, along with elk and bison carcasses. Restrictions will begin in some bear management areas on March 10.
