** correction on Belfield location made, 404 3rd Ave NE, Belfield, ND 58622 is the correct address **

Community gathering locations in Stark County will be available for those who wish to be in what may be a more secure structure during the upcoming storm.

Please plan to arrive early and do not wait until the strongest part of the storm is impacting your area. We will open these locations as close as possible to the anticipated threat timeframe while still allowing people enough time to travel safely. Once conditions begin to deteriorate, do NOT attempt to relocate. The risk of serious injury or death from high winds, flying debris, and hail will increase significantly.

These locations are intended to provide temporary shelter and safety only. They are NOT stocked with emergency supplies. Individuals should bring their own food, water, medications, phone chargers, and any other personal items they may need during their stay.

Please note that one of the shelter locations does not allow pets. This decision has been made to provide an option for individuals with severe pet allergies. We ask everyone to respect this policy. Other available locations will accommodate pets.

We greatly appreciate the organizations opening their doors to help protect our community during this event. Please treat these facilities with courtesy and respect.

⚠️ Weather Update – Stark County ⚠️

Stark County Emergency Management is closely monitoring reports regarding a potential severe weather event expected to impact our area later today.

At this time, the primary threats are damaging winds and large hail. Current forecasts indicate the possibility of a bow echo moving through the region, capable of producing wind gusts between 80 and 100 mph. These are expected to be brief gusts, not sustained winds, but they can still cause significant damage to trees, power lines, buildings, and vehicles.

The risk of tornadoes in Stark County is currently considered low. Our greatest concern at this time is the potential for destructive straight-line winds and flying debris.

Safety Reminders:
• Stay indoors during the storm. High winds can turn outdoor objects into dangerous projectiles capable of causing serious injury or death.
• Large hail can also cause significant injuries and property damage.
• If Outdoor Warning Sirens are activated, immediately go indoors and remain there until conditions improve and additional information is provided.
• Outdoor Warning Sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors to seek shelter. They are not intended to be heard inside every building.
• If you hear a siren, do not go outside to investigate or watch the storm. People can be seriously injured leaving shelter during severe weather events.

We will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates if additional actions become necessary. Please keep multiple ways to receive weather warnings and emergency information throughout the day.

85-100 mph gusts from t-storms possible ⚠️ NEW INTENSITY CATEGORY INTRODUCED: This is an additional detail added to the Storm Prediction Center's (SPC) outlooks this year. Today's main threat is going to be damaging wind gusts with the INTENSITY 2 shaded black area in the southwest (including New Town, Dickinson, Bowman, Baker, and Wibaux) meaning that a bow echo or derecho is possible with max gusts greater than 85 mph! Timing window for this is 6-10pm CDT.
SPC discussion: "A linear cluster of thunderstorms is expected to evolve during the late afternoon into potentially a bow echo during the early evening with the severe-wind risk notably increasing and becoming more widespread. Have increased the intensity highlight from southeast MT into western portions of ND where it seems increasingly probable a swath of intense gusts ---possibly a bow echo--- is progged by a diverse array of different model cores/runs this morning... Localized peak gusts may range 85-100 mph. Considered an upgrade to Moderate Risk... This activity will sweep northeastward during the evening with a gradual lessening of the wind/hail hazard towards the early overnight as it moves east into the eastern half of the Dakotas late."

Reminder: Outdoor Warning Siren testing resumes today and will continue regularly on Wednesdays at 11:00 AM. As we head into severe weather season, here are a few important siren facts to remember:

• Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are OUTSIDE. You may not hear them inside your home, especially while sleeping, during storms, or with windows closed. Always have multiple ways to receive weather alerts indoors, such as weather radios, phone apps, or local alerts.

• When the sirens sound, it is too late to relocate. Stay where you are and move immediately to the safest part of a sturdy structure away from windows.

• Just because the sirens stop does NOT mean the danger is over. Continue to monitor trusted weather sources and wait for additional information or an all-clear message.

• Sirens may be activated for hazards other than tornadoes. Always seek additional information to understand what the threat is and what protective actions you should take.

Stay weather aware and prepared this storm season, Stark County!

Outdoor warning siren testing will resume this Wednesday at 11:00 AM and will continue weekly until colder weather returns this fall.

While a few sirens still require maintenance, unforeseen circumstances with the maintenance process have led us to resume our regular testing schedule rather than delay testing any longer.

As always, these tests are an important part of ensuring the system is functioning properly and helping keep our communities prepared during severe weather season.
