Clement’s legacy, and preserves the rich heritage of Tennessee through engaging exhibits State Historic Site. Tours. Venue Rental. Membership. Community Center. All at the heart of Dickson. The Hotel Halbrook, the home of the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, was constructed in 1913 and is one of the few remaining examples of a railroad hotel in a small Tennessee town. It functioned as a hotel until

1954. On June 9, 2009, it opened to the public once again and became officially known as the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, under the Tennessee Historical Commission. The Museum explores the history and heritage of Dickson County, the Western Highland Rim, and the State of Tennessee through exhibits and collections relating to the railroad, iron ore industry, commerce, the Civil War, settlement, and the accomplishments of Tennessee Governor Frank G. Clement. The Museum is fortunate to have many artifacts and items that once belonged to Governor Clement and his family. Museum visitors can see the rooms where the Clements' lived while managing the Hotel Halbrook as well as exhibits featuring Governor Clement's early years, campaigns, and accomplishments. Here at the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, we educate and provide events for the community, give tours throughout the museum, provide membership to visitors, offer venue rental and are a visitor center right at the heart of Dickson. This project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Historical Commission.

The Clement Railroad Hotel Museum – Hotel Halbrook State Historic Site was honored to host tonight’s meeting of the Dickson County Historical & Genealogical Society

We welcomed a packed house for author and researcher Jerry O. Potter’s presentation on the tragic sinking of the steamboat Sultana.

Often considered the deadliest maritime disaster in American history, the Sultana explosion on the Mississippi River in April 1865 claimed the lives of an estimated 1,100 passengers, many of them Union soldiers returning home at the end of the Civil War.

Mr. Potter’s program brought this piece of American history to life through years of dedicated research and writing. We are grateful to him for sharing his expertise and to the Dickson County Historical & Genealogical Society for partnering with us to bring quality historical programming to our community.

The Clement Railroad Hotel Museum – Hotel Halbrook State Historic Site is excited to host the Dickson County Historical & Genealogical Society on Monday, June 8, for a fascinating program by author and researcher Jerry Potter on one of the deadliest maritime disasters in American history.

In the early morning hours of April 27, 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded and sank on the Mississippi River near Memphis. Overloaded with recently released Union prisoners of war returning home after the Civil War, the vessel was carrying more than six times its capacity. An estimated 1,800 people lost their lives, making it the worst maritime disaster in United States history claiming more lives than the Titanic.

Jerry Potter, noted author and researcher of the Sultana tragedy, will share the remarkable story of the disaster, the circumstances that led to it, and the lasting impact it had on thousands of American families in the closing days of the Civil War.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Clement Railroad Hotel Museum and is free and open to the public.

We hope you’ll join us for an evening of history and remembrance.
