UPDATE: Babylon Fire burning in SE Utah, around 25 miles southwest of Monticello, has now grown to nearly 103,000 acres, becoming the 4th largest wildfire in Utah history. The fire is now and is 21% contained but the fire weather conditions will make firefighting more difficult with low humidity, hot temperatures and gusty west winds over the next few days. SET EVACUATIONS remain in place for parts of San Juan County so residents should be prepared to leave if conditions worsen

There are now 2 level 2 risks tomorrow, one spanning across parts of the Southern Plains and one over central Missouri, where afternoon instability will spark supercells that will grow into bowing lines, posing a threat for large hail and damaging winds. Farther east, damaging winds remains a sporadic threat for the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, western Florida, and western Minnesota.

Severe storms are possible this afternoon and evening, and overnight into early Friday morning from 4PM-4AM mainly north of I-40, in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas! Large hail and damaging winds are the main concerns with the 1st round and damaging wind is the main concern with the 2nd round, but localized flooding and a spin-up are also possible⛈️⛈️

Day 1 outlook corrected: Slight Risk remains in place across the northern/central Plains, lower Missouri Valley into the lower Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic. Severe wind gusts and hail are the primary threats this afternoon and evening.

Level 2 of 5 today, and it covers a lot of ground: from Kansas and Missouri up into North Dakota.

Across most of that area, the thing to watch is damaging wind. A morning cluster of storms will fade, then rebuild in the afternoon as the air heats back up, punching out hard gusts along its leading edge. Up in North Dakota it plays a little different, where strong afternoon storms could drop some big hail. Around Columbia, MO the busiest stretch runs about 2-10 PM, peaking near 4, so plan any outdoor time around that.

Storm Update: It’s already a hot day, and it’s going to get even hotter throughout the state. Heat index values will be up to 110° across Southeastern sections, so take it easy.

This afternoon and evening, I expect a few isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop, but coverage will generally be lower than the last few days. A stronger or severe storm like we’ve had the last few days can’t be ruled out. Gusty to damaging winds are the main threat.

Here’s a look at the future radar around 6PM, coverage is pretty low on that we could see a couple more storms compared to what it is showing but it gives you a good idea of lower coverage today.

Higher storm coverage is expected this weekend.
