As Dimmitt ISD, Hart ISD, and Nazareth ISD begin their school year, please remember to pay attention to the school buses on the streets and roadways and if they have their flashing red lights.

WHEN YOU MUST STOP: Two Lane or Multi Lane roads. Traffic in both directions must stop.

Center Turn Lane, if a road is divided by a left turn Lane (no physical barrier) the driver traveling in either direction must still stop.
WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STOP:

Divided Highway- you do not stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights if you are traveling in the opposite direction and the highway/roadway is separated by a raised median, concrete barrier or other physical barrier such as a bar ditch.

Motorist are also asked to be aware of school zones and cross walks, since there may be pedestrians walking to and from school.

The Castro County Commissioner's Court has placed a 90 Day Burn Ban for Castro County. Eventhough we have received some rain, the county is still experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions. It is asked that you do not burn. If you are burning you maybe be cited and receive a fine up to $500 per violation.

UPDATE: Dimmitt, Texas, July 8, 2026: Two men have been arrested in connection with a homicide investigation that occurred on Monday July 6, 2026 in Castro County. Both men were arrested on warrants and booked into the Castro County Jail where they are awaiting arraignment. William Quintero Zuniga, 25, of Hart, Texas was charged with Murder and Tampering with Physical Evidence. Brayan Quintero Trejo, 23, of Hart, Texas was charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence in connection with the case. The victim was identified as Dereck Lorenzo Rosalez, 21, of Earth, Texas. The investigation conducted by the Texas Rangers and the Castro County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the identification of the suspects who had fled the scene of the assault and their location where they were taken into custody.

The Castro County Sheriff's Office with the assistance of the Texas Rangers are investigating a homicide. On Monday July 6, 2026 at 8:48 p.m. Sheriff's Office communications dispatch received several 911 calls in reference to some type of disturbance and a man being down in the 1100 block of Ave B in the Hacker Addition outside the Hart city limits. The first Deputy that arrived located a male on the ground outside a residence with wounds. It was learned by the Deputy that the assailants had fled the area in an unknown vehicle. The Deputy administered first aid to the victim while waiting for Hart Rescue and Castro County EMS to arrive. The victim was transported to the emergency room at the Plains Memorial Hospital in Dimmitt. The victim succumb to his injuries at the hospital. Castro County Justice of the Peace Mary Ewing ordered an autopsy which will be performed in Lubbock, Texas.
Through investigative efforts, two persons of interest were identified. Sheriff's Office Deputies and Texas Rangers located the two persons at a different location in Southern Castro County and taken into custody.
This is still an active investigation and the Castro County Sheriff's Office states that there is no threat to to the public.
