The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is responsible for coordinating state and federal resources to assist local government in response and relief activities in the event of an emergency or disaster, as well as coordinating homeland security initiatives and various federal grants.

Following the March 2025 Northern Michigan Ice Storm, downed trees blocked an accessibility ramp at the home of an elderly couple with mobility challenges, leaving them unable to safely leave their residence. Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian organization specializing in disaster response, stepped in to clear the debris and restore access to the ramp, helping the couple regain a safe way in and out of their home.

This , we recognize Team Rubicon and the many partners who work alongside emergency managers to support Michigan communities before, during and after disasters.

🔔REMINDER: The deadline for survivors to apply for FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency's Individual Assistance (IA) program is Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time. The deadline to apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loan for physical damage is also Aug. 31, 2026.

Congressman John Moolenaar stopped by our Michigan Disaster Recovery Center (MI DRC) in Cadillac today to meet with disaster survivors and learn more about the recovery efforts underway following the April 10-21 severe storms, tornadoes and flooding.

If your home, personal property or vehicle was damaged, there is still time to apply for federal financial assistance. The deadline to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance and low-interest disaster loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is Monday, Aug. 31. On this , we recognize the outstanding support of our Private Public Partnership Program (P3) members. When severe weather, flooding, and a dam at risk of breaching threatened Michigan communities in April 2026, Consumers Energy, Meijer, HomeWorks Tri-County, Great Lakes Energy, Midwest Energy & Communications, and DTE Energy stepped up to provide critical supplies and services.

If floodwaters entered your home during the April 10-21, 2026 storms, your furnace or HVAC system may have been damaged. If repairs or replacement aren't covered by insurance, FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency may be able to help.

Every state agency has an emergency manager who supports preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. Some agencies also have specialized teams that strengthen Michigan’s ability to respond to disasters.

During the 2025 Michigan Ice Storm, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Incident Management Team worked with the Michigan National Guard and other partners to keep the public safe, clearing over 630 miles of roads and restoring access to 34 communications towers. This , we recognize and thank all of the state partners who worked tirelessly during this historic event.
