A Story of Compassion and Partnership 😇💝
On Tuesday evening around 8:00 PM, what started as a rescue for what a community member thought was a washed-away kitten turned out to be a tiny, vulnerable fox pup.
When our team first brought him in, we were so hopeful that this little guy would pull through. Our officers and our dedicated partners at Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge poured everything into giving him a fighting chance. Unfortunately, the fox pup was silently battling a severe case of distemper, and despite everyone's best efforts, he passed away.
While these losses are always heavy on our hearts, especially when we hold onto so much hope, this story highlights the incredible, round-the-clock dedication of our Animal Services Team and the local wildlife rehabilitators. We are deeply grateful to Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge for their expertise and unwavering compassion.
Wildlife Safety Reminder🦊
This rescue serves as an important reminder for our community when encountering wild animals in distress:
Identities Can Be Deceiving: Wildlife babies can easily look like domestic kittens or puppies when they are wet, dirty, or very young.
Hidden Illnesses: Animals can carry contagious diseases like distemper without showing obvious symptoms right away. 🐾Please remember to talk to your Veterinarian about vaccinating your household pets to protect them against these illnesses.
Call the Professionals: If you find a wild animal that appears injured, orphaned, or washed away, please do not handle it directly. Keep children and pets away, and call Animal Services or the Virginia Department of Wildlife immediately so someone can safely assist.
Thank you to the alert resident who called this in, and to Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us to care for our local wildlife.
