It's Law Enforcement Torch Run day in Central Virginia! Tonight, the torch will be carried into the opening ceremony of the Special Olympic games in Richmond.

Each year, law enforcement agencies from around the commonwealth create fundraisers to benefit the Special Olympics. Today, we wanted to feature ours!

Each spring, our recruits and staff are able to purchase Law Enforcement Torch Run t-shirts, and then on specific Fridays though the end of the Academy classes, the recruits and staff are able to pay $5 to wear jeans, sneakers, and their LETR shirts for the day. These $5 donations add up, as we've raised over $300 already this year, with more Fridays coming. Over the years, our t-shirt sales and $5 Fridays have raised over $4,000 for Special Olympics of VA! 🔥

The 106th Basic Law Enforcement Academy class spent last week learning about forensic science and evidence collection. They practiced taking fingerprints (old school, with ink and paper), learned how to dust for fingerprints, document a crime scene, and package evidence. We are thankful to the agency instructors who spent last week teaching this important topic and evaluating the recruits on their practical exercises.

Yesterday, the 119th Basic Jailor Academy class finished their defensive tactics training. This block of instruction culminates in practical exercises where they need to demonstrate the skills they've learned during their training, by performing them correctly on our specialty instructors. This class is about 3 weeks from graduation, when they'll return to their facilities, as certified jailors!

Congratulations to the 18 students who graduated today from the 36th Animal Control Officer school. Their three weeks of training have included dozens of blocks instruction, from veterinary-related topics and investigations involving animals to case law and animal shelter regulations. These folks will now be returning to their agencies, ready to protect and serve our furry and scaly friends, who can't speak for themselves! 🐕🐈🦎🐄

Last night, we had Dr. Byron Greenberg here to talk with the 106th Basic Law Enforcement Academy recruits and their family members on the impact of a law enforcement career on marriages and relationships. We are thankful to the family members who came to support their recruit as the "after" of the Academy gets closer.
