SPRINGFIELD – In response to today’s passage of the FY27 budget in the Illinois General Assembly, State Representative Brad Fritts (R-Dixon) released the following statement:

“The FY27 budget was more of the same in Springfield: the same deceptive practices and lack of transparency on another record-breaking budget. This year’s budget is $55.9 billion, with an additional $800 million in new taxes and fees on working families.

“While the budget itself is unbalanced and has severely misplaced priorities, the worst part of passing the budget is the process. This year, the final amendments to the budget were filed one hour before consideration, and then House Democrats waived their own rules! These rules aren’t meant to be optional. They’re meant to be a mechanism to prevent legislation from being rammed through in the middle of the night and to provide transparency to taxpayers.

“What we saw yesterday and this morning was a textbook case of bad government. Illinoisans deserve better than the broken process Springfield Democrats have been delivering.”

Tonight, I spoke on the House floor against a bill that would allow townships to donate public aid dollars to food banks without any eligibility requirements. To be clear, we all want to ensure our communities have access to food. But this bill allows tax dollars to be given away with absolutely zero guardrails for actual need or residency. Instead of giving these funds away to individuals who may not even live in the community, local governments should do the responsible thing and lower property taxes!

It’s the final week of session down in Springfield and it’s been abnormally slow. As the final budget gets worked out, I hope that we see substantial property tax relief and no new taxes. Stay tuned as we wrap up our spring legislative session on Sunday.

Since taking office, Governor Pritzker has grown the Illinois state budget by almost 40%. That kind of spending is completely unsustainable and has created an affordability crisis for Illinois taxpayers.

Last week, I unanimously passed a bill to increase local control and save money for smaller units of local government.

Senate Bill 2836 is an important bipartisan initiative that will assist local units of government in saving money by raising the audit threshold for small units of government that are exempt from costly annual audits. This bill, which was crafted with collaboration from the Comptroller’s office and the Township Officials of Illinois, adjusts the audit threshold for inflation from where it was originally set.

Under current law, every governmental entity in Illinois with combined revenues over $850,000 is required to pay for a yearly audit performed by a Certified Public Accountant. Senate Bill 2836 will increase the revenue threshold to include units of government that generate less than $1.4 million in revenue. These local units of government will continue to submit their annual financial reports to the Comptroller.

Rural residents in Illinois need relief now. This bill will help alleviate a burden on our smaller units of local government that are struggling to pay for these expensive yearly audits, which force them to raise property tax levies to cover the expense. This bill will finally prioritize our rural communities and give some relief for taxpayers.
