Would love to hear some feedback on this idea I proposed in Monday’s council meeting. $50,000 spent means $135,000+ going in to our local businesses to help them out until we get back to normal.

The City Council is looking at ways to be creative with generating local support for small businesses.

Since we have been back in council chambers, I have been advocating for live streaming city council meetings so that citizens can tune in from home and watch while providing more transparency.

So the question for you all is, would you tune in to watch the council meetings in the future if live-streamed?

I would also push for the money for the equipment to come from the Recovery Fund, being that is a 1 time purchase and not a yearly expenditure.

If you or anyone you know is sheltering in place where someone is subjected to the threat of or the act of physical violence, know that the YWCA is still open and taking emergency calls. Do NOT for a second hesitate to call them to seek help.

The Sister Cities delegation from Herzberg, Germany arrived today! They’ll be spending a week in our beautiful city and sharing some cultural aspects of their hometown with us. If you bump in to any of them, feel free to say and make them feel at home. @ Dixon, Illinois

Over the last 7 years, each mayoral candidate has worked with groups to get things accomplished as they saw fit.

One of us worked and was a leading voice to get a sports complex/recreation center for the children and adults of Dixon to enjoy. To have more activities for everyone to enjoy and provide entertainment and physical fitness possibilities. This potential year-round facility would have been fantastic for our citizens and been beneficial to our economic development by bringing in plenty of outside families and teams for tournaments who would then enjoy our shopping and restaurants, while also showing hotel developers that they need to get rooms built in Dixon at a quicker rate.

The other was the leading voice against a sports complex/recreation center, saying it was beyond what we needed. But now wants to talk about an aquatic center that would only be useful 3 months out of the year. Rockford, a city nearly 10x’s our size sold off Magic Waters because it was not fiscally viable and lost too much money.

I look forward to working with the Park District, Schools, and YMCA on developing a plan to bring life back to the idea of a rec. center for Dixon over the next few years. Not only would this be fantastic for our citizens, but also our businesses. When an idea is good for the citizens and builds economic development, you can’t go wrong!

Congratulations to Dixon’s next City Fire Chief, Ryan Buskohl! Look forward to working with you in the future, Chief!

Congratulations to Dixon’s next City Fire Chief, Ryan Buskohl! Look forward to working with you in the future, Chief!

“Fire Captain Ryan Buskohl named next Dixon Fire Chief”

Dixon Fire Captain Ryan Buskohl will be appointed to serve as the next Dixon Fire Chief. Buskohl, 40, is a life-long resident of the Sauk Valley area and a 14 year veteran of the Dixon Fire Department. Buskohl was selected following an extensive process administered by an advisory committee. The committee consisted of City Councilmen Mike Venier and Dennis Considine, Assistant City Manager Matt Heckman, Finance Director / HR Becky Fredericks, Fire Chief Tim Shipman, Firefighter Aaron Brown, Division Chief Matt Knott of the Rockford Fire Department, and City Manager Danny Langloss. The committee was created to assist City Manager Danny Langloss in providing an independent, merit-based process. Prior to the interviews, candidates were required to submit a detailed research paper on a specific fire department initiative.

Buskohl joined the Dixon Fire Department in 2005 after working as a paramedic with CGH Emergency Medical Services and a volunteer with the Polo Fire Department. Buskohl quickly moved his way up the ranks and was promoted to Fire Lieutenant in 2011. Buskohl served in that leadership position for two years and was then promoted to Fire Captain in September of 2013. Buskohl is an adjunct instructor and curriculum coordinator of fire science at Sauk Valley Community College. Buskohl is also a board member of the Sauk Valley Community Leadership Development Program.

City Manager Danny Langloss said, “We had two highly qualified applicants for this position who have dedicated their life to serve Dixon. Both are incredibly accomplished in their field and are great leaders. I would like to congratulate both men on doing a great job throughout this process.”

Buskohl will replace Chief Tim Shipman upon his retirement in late July or early August. Langloss said, “With Chief Shipman and Deputy Chief Callison announcing their retirements, we felt it was important to select our next fire chief and give him the opportunity to work with Shipman and Callison over the next four months to ensure a smooth transition.” Buskohl will retain his duties as a Fire Captain during the transition.

While I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, it is an amazing honor to receive the endorsement for Mayor from the Dixon City Fire Local 1943. They set the standard for which other Departments should strive to be, and their dedication to the safety of our city is of the highest degree. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with the union and leadership on keeping our citizens safe and educated in the future.

Dixon City Firefighter’s Local 1943 have chosen to endorse Ryan Marshall in the upcoming mayoral election for the City of Dixon. In the release by the Local they say they believe Ryan Marshall has a realistic vision for the future of Dixon and realizes that growth is going to come from many organ

Chief Shipman has been the standard with which Chief’s should be judged. His leadership has been instrumental in helping to make Dixon Fire so highly rated and keeping our citizens safe. Thank you Chief Shipman, we are all thankful for your work, and look forward to seeing you leading our Building Department in the future!

With the world changing, we are in the fortunate place to be able to keep our Public Safety funding levels consistent. Cuts and hiring freezes through attrition, is not what is needed for Dixon. The training of our officers and firefighters is what has kept our citizens safe, and that is something that does not need to be messed with. I will continue fighting to make sure that we are not cutting Public Safety Funding just for the sake of saying cuts are being made.
I look forward to working with the Fire and Police Departments on how to continuing their training and staffing levels while keeping their costs down, but cutting to the detriment of staffing is irresponsible.
We are one of the 10 safest cities in Illinois, and intend to keep it that way!
