At approximately 18:02 yesterday July 8th 2024, DFVAC was dispatched to the rear of 145 Palisade Street to stage for the swimmer in distress. DFVAC alongside DFFD and DFPD arrived on scene to credible reports of a swimmer who had went under and not surfaced.

DFFD Incident commander, Chief Joe Giuliano, requested additional resources from across and outside of Westchester County for a rescue. Responding agencies/units included WCDES Field Comm 1, NYPD Aviation with Divers, Yorktown FD Water Rescue & Dive Team, multiple marine units including WCPD and Piedmont FD, AMR as a secondary EMS unit for divers in the water and Valhalla VAC EMS for fire rehab.

Despite searching for 3+ hours into the darkness the search was suspended on July 8th. A recovery effort continued on July 9th at about 9am and subsequently, a body was recovered from the Hudson River at approximately 10:30am. At this time the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victims family and friends.

While we would have hoped to report a better outcome, incidents such as this highlight how our county wide emergency services work well together - responding seamlessly out of our primary districts by many whom are volunteers

Shortly after 4pm, DFVAC was notified by DFPD of a “derailment” of a rollercoaster at the roller coaster at waterfront park. Three of our crews stationed down at waterfront park responded along side DFPD and DFFD within minutes and encountered one five year old patient. DFVAC assessed the patient and released them on scene with no injuries.

Strong work to stabilize the ride and prevent any further injuries by DFPD and DFFD.
