The Community Housing Association of Dodge City (CHAD) had a very successful 2019. We would like to thank all of our partners who donated services, materials and provided support this year.

The City of Dodge City - Government provides staff time, donated lots, donated homes and more. Local contractors, M.R. Builder LLC, Pruitt Electric LLC, Weber Refrigeration, Henton Construction, Agundis Heating and Air, Sutherlands Dodge City, Dowling Construction, Mead Lumber, Wildcat Electric, A1 Concrete, and Superior Home Improvements, LLC provide discounted or donated services/materials or/and teach the DC3 students their trade.

Project Update | Quietzone

The last two pieces of the Quietzone puzzle are falling into place to put an end to the blowing of train horns along the mainline tracks through town.

The first piece was the installation of signal preemption by BNSF at the 14th Ave. railroad crossing just south of Wyatt Earp Blvd. earlier this month. This allows the railroad crossing to communicate with the traffic signal controller at the street intersection to clear out northbound traffic before the gate arms drop on the rails.

The second piece is updating of the United States Department of Transportation crossing inventory forms for each crossing included in the quietzone. This required updated traffic counts and physical attributes (signing, lights, preemption, etc.) of all crossings included in the quietzone. These forms were sent off to the Kansas Department of Transportation to be officially reviewed and accepted, and are expected to be approved this week.

Once the updated crossing inventories are approved, a Notice of Establishment for a quietzone will be mailed off to all the necessary parties (Federal Railroad Administration, KDOT, BNSF, etc.), and the quietzone can come into effect 21 days after the mailing date.

If all goes to plan with the inventory forms, the quietzone should be officially established sometime in January 2020.

It’s day 1️⃣ of our #12daysofChristmasonBootHill

We’re kicking this off with one of our favorite hobbies - browsing the thousands of treasures found at Boot Hill Antiques! It’s well worth the two block walk to the top floor of the old Eckles building.

The Cottage has several finds from Boot Hill Antiques. Including a repurposed black cabinet, which is a staple to our coffee bar!

DC3 Construction Technology

The Community Housing Association of Dodge City awarded 11 scholarships to students in the DCCC Building Construction Technology Program.
Students receiving scholarships are Servando Martinez, Dennis Linares, Jeffrey Schnitker, Heriberto Real, Ivan Sanchez Esquivel, Ismael Rosas, Wyatt Hessman, Mason Dickens, Carlos Mendoza, Ismael Ochoa and Roberto Carreto.

The Dodge City Community College Building Construction Technology Program and CHAD partner to build new moderate-income housing units every year. This year, we are building a duplex at 806 Westlawn. Each unit will contain 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a one car garage. The students began construction in September and will finish in May 2020. The students build the house from the ground up, learning all aspects of construction. We partner with local businesses where we need licensed contractors for the HVAC, electrical and plumbing. “We are lucky to have such great contractors in Dodge City who are willing to teach the students their trade while providing their service” said Mollea Wainscott, Housing Coordinator for the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation. “It’s beneficial to the students to learn the licensed trades along with the general construction.”

This partnership allows the Community Housing Association of Dodge City to accomplish three things; building additional housing units, training our future workforce and cleaning up blighted neighborhoods. This is the fourth year that CHAD and the college have partnered together to build new housing, previous new builds include a duplex on Brier and Avenue E and new houses on Mulberry Circle and Elm Street. More information regarding the program and pictures of the construction can be found on the DC3 Construction Technology page or at www.DodgeCityHousing.com.
