Reality U Through the Pando Initiative Coming to Dodge City

Dodge City 8th grade students will soon have the opportunity to experience real world decision making through Reality U, an interactive financial literacy simulation presented through the Pando Initiative.

Reality U is a hands-on learning experience designed to help students understand the financial realities of adulthood. During the simulation, students are assigned a career, salary, and family scenario, then navigate real-life expenses such as housing, transportation, childcare, groceries, insurance, and more. The experience challenges students to make informed decisions, manage a budget, and understand how education and career choices impact their future lifestyle.

Event Dates:

September 24th-Dodge City Middle School (Civic Center)

September 25th- Comanche Middle School (Civic Center)

Reality U helps students:

Build practical money management and budgeting skills

Understand the true cost of living and financial responsibilities

Connect education and career choices to long-term outcomes

Practice real-world decision-making in a supportive environment

To make this impactful experience possible, community and business support is essential.

Sponsorship Opportunity

Community partners are invited to sponsor Reality U for $500. Sponsorships help cover program materials, technology, and resources needed to provide this experience to students at no cost to schools. Sponsors will be recognized as supporters of youth education, workforce readiness, and financial literacy in our community.

Volunteer Opportunity

Reality U relies on volunteers to bring the simulation to life. Volunteers assist students at decision making stations, answer questions, and help guide them through their budgets. No prior teaching or financial experience is required; training will be provided. Volunteers may participate for a half-day or full-day and will have a direct impact on students’ understanding of real-world financial choices.

By bringing Reality U to Dodge City, the Pando Initiative and community partners are investing in the future workforce and empowering students with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed beyond high school.

SHOP LOCAL FRIDAY
Shop Local. Support Local. Strengthen Dodge City.

This Friday we’re highlighting Boot Hill Distillery!

Boot Hill Distillery is a great example of local entrepreneurship coming full circle, from grain grown on a fifth-generation family farm in western Kansas to products made right here in Dodge City.

Along the way, the business helped breathe new life into one of Dodge City’s historic buildings while creating a destination that introduces visitors to our agriculture, history and community.

When you support local businesses, you’re supporting the entrepreneurs, families and investments that make Dodge City unique.

This week, Mollea Lightner, Assistant Director of Economic Development, attended the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) Annual Conference to learn more about housing initiatives and opportunities across Kansas.

In addition to learning more about KHRC programs and resources, Mollea had the opportunity to connect with developers and other housing experts from across the state.
These conversations provided valuable insight into what developers are seeing in today’s market, the challenges they face, and what communities can do to help make new housing projects possible.

Mollea returned with new ideas, connections, and information we can put to work as the Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation continues creating housing opportunities throughout our community.

Content Creation with AI Workshop Gives Local Businesses Practical Tools for Smarter Marketing!

Local business owners, entrepreneurs, and students gathered Tuesday for a three-hour Content Creation with AIworkshop featuring nationally recognized marketing expert Maliha Khan, Founder and CEO of Khanect the Dots (KTD).

The workshop brought together 25 attendees, including seven students from Demon Apparel who were able to participate through a scholarship provided by the Rural Education Workforce Alliance (REWA).

Khan's engaging and approachable presentation made what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming topic, using artificial intelligence in marketing, feel practical and accessible. With a background that spans design, marketing strategy, and creative ex*****on, Khan helps organizations bridge the gap between big-picture strategy and day-to-day implementation. She is a Stevie® Award winner in the Women in AI Leadership category and has been a nationally recognized speaker at events including Content Marketing World and MarketingProfs.

Throughout the workshop, attendees explored practical ways to incorporate AI into their marketing efforts while still maintaining an authentic brand identity. Participants gained tangible takeaways for developing a stronger brand voice, generating content ideas, and creating marketing content more efficiently and consistently.

Khan also shared helpful marketing tips and tricks that attendees could immediately apply to their own businesses and organizations. Rather than focusing solely on the technology, the workshop emphasized using AI as a tool to enhance creativity, save time, and support a thoughtful marketing strategy without sacrificing the human element that makes a brand unique.

The three hours flew by thanks to Khan's fun, engaging, knowledgeable, and personable presentation style. Attendees left with new ideas, practical tools, and a better understanding of how AI can become a useful part of their marketing toolkit.

The workshop was a great example of the value of bringing high-quality professional development opportunities to local businesses, entrepreneurs, and students, while also providing opportunities for the next generation of entrepreneurs to participate.
