Here is a quick look at some snowfall reports across western and central Kansas as of 4:45pm this Tuesday afternoon 1/28. Image provided by NWS Wichita.

01/28/2020

Update! In Dodge City main streets are wet and slushy, side streets are still mostly snow covered, the storm seems to be tracking to the east and KHP is busy with multiple slide offs, please continue to use caution if you need to travel.

01/28/2020

Just spoke with our Road and Bridge Superintendent, he reports the paved roads are becoming slushy and still have some snowpack, they are continuing to work to clear them. They are not working the dirt roads because they are to soft and wet to plow effectively, he is concerned about a re-freeze as the temperatures drop later. Please use caution if attempting to travel.

...HOW MUCH SNOW HAVE YOU MEASURED SO FAR?...

Overnight through early this morning, radar observations suggest *significant* snowfall along an axis from Liberal to Plains to Fowler-Minneola, to Ford-Bucklin areas. Roughly along and just north of the Highway 54 corridor -- this narrow zone likely had 8+ inches of snow. We already received one picture on social media of 9" snowfall measured in Liberal.

The link below has current road conditions or you can call 511. Please plan carefully if you must go out and take an emergency kit. Blankets, food, water, phone charger and even a shovel if possible. Remember even emergency vehicles are hindered by weather and response could take a bit. Pay special attention to where you are at, this will be important in the event you slide off. If you do slide off please ensure the exhaust pipe of your vehicle is clear of any snow ice or debris to avoid carbon monoxide problems while you wait.

01/28/2020

We are receiving reports of 6” of snow in Bucklin, possibly 9” in liberal 4-5 in Spearville. None of these are official totals. Know that our county plow crews are out and about working to get roads cleared, please give crews plenty of space to work!

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will be possible from late today through early Friday morning. Areas of light rain and snow will begin spread into the southwest Kansas late this afternoon. Occasional sleet, freezing rain and even some light snow can be expected during the overnight hours. Snow/Sleet accumulations will generally be less than one half inch. Ice accumulations are expected to range from 0.10” to near 0.25”. The highest ice accumulations currently appears to be located south and east of Dodge City, especially in the Pratt and Medicine Lodge areas. Anyone who might have travel plans overnight or early Friday morning should be prepared for slick road conditions. Check the latest forecast before you head out. Reduce speed and allow plenty of space between you and the vehicles in front of you.

The Dodge City Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire at 2305 1st Ave this morning at 6:01 am. Upon arrival heavy fire was showing from a third floor window of an apartment building. Dodge City and Ford County fire personnel made entry to the structure to extinguish the fire while Dodge City police officers assisted with the evacuation of the lower floors. There were no serious injuries, however around 15 people have been displaced from their homes until the building can be repaired.
A big thank you also to First Dental for providing coffee to first responders on a cold December morning.
