Veterans Day is a time to honor and thank all who have served in the military, in both wartime and peacetime.
The holiday began as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, following President Wilson’s proclamation recognizing the heroism of those who died in World War I. In 1938, it became a legal holiday dedicated to world peace. After World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the 1938 act in 1954, renaming it Veterans Day to honor all American veterans. That same year, President Eisenhower urged the nation to observe the day widely, emphasizing gratitude for the sacrifices of veterans throughout history.
Today, we continue to honor those who have served and acknowledge the vital role they play in safeguarding our freedoms. Thank you to all veterans for your dedication and service.
