Luckily, we don't hear much about rabies in everyday life — so it is understandable to wonder if rabies vaccines are still actually that important for pets, especially if your animals stay indoors. 🐾

The reality is that rabies is still present in wildlife, and even indoor pets can be unexpectedly exposed — especially through animals like bats that may enter homes.

Why are rabies vaccines so important?
• Wildlife like bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes can carry rabies
• Vaccinating pets creates a barrier between wildlife and people
• Vaccinated pets are much safer if they are ever exposed to a potentially rabid animal

Keeping your pet up to date on rabies vaccines is a simple step that helps protect your family, your pets, and our community. 💙🐶🐱

K9 Fenix got his vaccines and says they don’t even hurt 😉🐕🚔

If you are unsure whether your pet is due for a rabies vaccine, contact your veterinarian to check their records.

Forewarning!

🚔 Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 24, the Iowa & Grant County Emergency Response Team (ERT) will be conducting a brief training exercise at Dodgeville High School during the morning hours.

During this time, community members may notice several law enforcement vehicles at DHS and a larger police presence than usual. This is a planned training exercise only and there is no cause for concern.

The training is expected to last approximately one hour and will involve officers practicing room-clearing procedures inside the building.

We appreciate our partnership with local law enforcement and their commitment to ongoing training and preparedness.

Mosquitoes don't need much—just a little standing water and a few days to get comfortable. 🦟

After recent rain, take a look around your yard for places water may be collecting. Check flower pots, buckets, birdbaths, pet bowls, toys, tarps, wheelbarrows, and other containers that collect rainwater.
