What an incredible two days of learning, creativity, exploration, and fun at STEAM camp. We were excited to learn alongside youth from Grady County 4-H, Worth County 4-H, and Colquitt County 4-H.
Day 1 – History, Science, Technology & Art
Our adventure began at the Pope's Museum in Ochlocknee, where we learned about the remarkable life of Laura Pope Forester. We discovered how she supported women veterans, became a successful self-taught artist, and created sculptures that continue to tell important stories today.
We were also treated to outstanding presentations from two historical interpreters portraying a World War II nurse and a woman veteran. They did an excellent job explaining their roles and helping our youth understand the importance of their contributions during WWII.
Our scientist for the day, who showed participants how STEM connects to X-rays, medical technology, and careers in science. The youth enjoyed learning how science impacts healthcare and our everyday lives.
We also welcomed an art teacher who demonstrated how art plays a role in many careers and can be expressed in countless ways.
The day concluded at the Grady County 4-H Office with a special art project were youth were challenged to create a piece honoring a woman who inspires, encourages, motivates, and supports them. Using materials ranging from aluminum foil to sand to clay and many other creative supplies. Participants designed unique works of art that reflected the special women in their lives. Thand you Grady County 4-H for planning an awesome first day.
Day 2 – Exploring Nature, Science & 4-H Programs
On our second day, we traveled to Colquitt County 4-H for another exciting day of hands-on learning.
Participants explored: Camouflage & Genetics, Nature's Colors, Seed Bomb Creation
They also watched The Lorax and put their knowledge to the test with some challenging trivia questions.
Youth had the opportunity to learn about several exciting 4-H programs, including:
Wildlife Judging, Forestry, Land Judging
We also participated in a activity called Recycling Art, where youth created unique artwork using a variety of beans and other materials.
Thank you to Colquitt County 4-H for hosting such a wonderful day of learning and exploration.
Over the past two days, our youth experienced firsthand how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math are all connected in the world around us. Most importantly, they learned, created, collaborated, and had FUN!
