UGA Cooperative Extension was founded in 1914 to take research-based agricultural information to the people of Georgia. Through the cooperative funding of federal, state, and county governments, Extension agents are in almost every county in Georgia. County agents and specialist throughout the state share information on issues like water quality, profitability in agribusiness, family wellness and

life skills. UGA Cooperative Extension coordinates 4-H, Georgia's largest youth program. Each year, almost 200,000 young Georgians participate in community projects, summer camps and conference on today's issues while having fun and learning to work together. Georgia National Fair Rally (7th-12th grade)
We are excited for the annual 4-H Day at the Georgia National Fair held on Friday, October 16th, 2026. This a great recreational opportunity, as well as an educational one as youth get to view the 4-H displays and learn more about Georgia agriculture through the number of exhibit halls and attractions onsite in Perry. As part of 4-H Day at Georgia National Fair, 4-H will hold a rally in the Reaves Arena. Deadline to sign up is Monday, September 14th. Space is limited. Cost for arm band to ride is $30

Seminole County and Grady County 4-H members attended 4-H Veterinary Science Career Exploration Day on August 31 in Tifton at the UGA Tifton Diagnostic Lab. Participants gained hands-on lab experience and learned about the many facets of the veterinary profession. They rotated through three diagnostic stations and heard from the College of Vet Med’s Office of Academic Affairs about the path to becoming a veterinarian.
They were accepted to the UGA's College of Vet Medicine Tifton Diagnostic & Investigational Lab out of 66 applicants and 35 spots.

Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging
If you are interested in being on the Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging team, it is time to sign up. This event is for all 4-H members. The first practice will be held September 23 at the Seminole County Extension office. It will be held 3:15-5:00. There will be training sessions held for you to learn about the contest. This is an educational class that helps you learn to be a good consumer.

Space is limited 4-H’ers, so you must call to sign up. You must attend the first practice or call ahead of time and talk to 4-H office to be excused. At the training sessions you will learn how to make good choices by comparing items like jackets, televisions, fast food, and music streaming services. Junior competitors (5th-8th grade) will write a 30 second speech about cotton, and Seniors (9th -12th grade) will write a 90 second commercial about cotton. The contest will be held on Wednesday, November 11th in Tifton. Team members will be expected to purchase a shirt to wear to contest, cost is $11. For more information call 229-524-2326.

It’s time to check your peanuts for maturity to determine the optimal digging date. The Seminole County Extension ANR Agent is set up and ready to blast peanuts and put them on the board. This should be done around 125 days after planting and again around 7 to 10 days before the first predicted digging date. It is crucial to collect representative samples from across the entire field to accurately predict the optimal digging date. Samples should be collected by pulling up three to five peanut plants from at least three different sections of the field and collecting any pods left in the soil. Keep the sections separate and bring the collected plants to the Seminole County Extension office. If you would like to pick the peanuts yourself, we will need roughly 200 to 220 pods or a quart-size Ziploc bag. Reach out to Justin Odom at 229-524-2326 if you have any questions or to set a date and time to have the maturity of your peanuts checked.

Today, Seminole County Extension hosted a Peanut Maturity and Cotton Defoliation meeting. Dr. Scott Monfort, UGA Peanut Agronomist, and Dr. Camp Hand, UGA Cotton Agronomist, spoke to the group about the current growing season and upcoming harvest season. The group also enjoyed a delicious breakfast. Special thanks to the specialists for coming and speaking to the group.

Pre-K drop off is at 7:30AM in the gym/lunchroom parking lot, so you need to be parked before 7:30AM or may get caught in the traffic.

We recently attended the annual Epsilon Sigma Phi Meeting Ringing in Excellence. Former Seminole 4-H'er, Johnelle Simpson was the keynote speaker for the meeting and he spoke to group on How to be Excellent.
