We have quite a few new members on our department, so we took advantage of the nice weather this morning to train on rural water supply operations. We don't have fire hydrants outside of town, so we have to set up a portable tank and shuttle water by truck to the scene. This adds a level of complexity to the fire ground. As a volunteer department, we never know how many responders weโ€™ll have on any given call, so itโ€™s critical that every member is confident and capable in all roles. Training like this helps ensure weโ€™re ready to provide the best possible service to our community.

Gov. Pillen Issuing Burn Ban for Nebraska

LINCOLN, NE โ€“ Today, Governor Jim Pillen is issuing a statewide burn ban, to help reduce the potential for additional wildfires in Nebraska. Dry and windy conditions have caused the spread of significant fires in the central and western parts of the state. Earlier today, Gov. Pillen issued an emergency proclamation activating the deployment of state resources to help combat fires, including the use of aircraft and personnel from the Nebraska National Guard.

The Governorโ€™s executive order prohibiting burning will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on March 27.

It is EXTREMELY DRY right now. When this fire started, winds were out of the south at 8-10 mph. That level of wind doesn't usually cause rapid fire spread, but in this case, the dry vegetation caused it to spread very quickly. We'd like to thank Grand Island Rural Fire Department, Giltner Fire & Rescue, and Phillips Fire & Rescue for their quick mutual aid response. We would also like to thank Nebraska State Patrol and Hall County Sheriff's Department for providing traffic control around the scene, which kept our firefighters safe.

About 80 acres of farm ground burned Friday afternoon in a grass fire near Doniphan.

We would like to thank Grand Island Rural Fire Department, Alda Fire Department, Giltner Fire Department, Phillips Fire Department, Kenesaw, NE Volunteer Fire Department, Juniata Fire Department, Wood River Fire & Rescue Dept., Cairo Fire Department, and St Libory Fire Department for helping us on our grass fire today. The wind, terrain, and lack of access made it one of the tougher fires we've fought in a while. We couldn't do it without everyone's help. We had over 50 firefighters on scene for most of the day helping get it under control.
