Attention ATV/UTV riders! Expect increased patrols this holiday weekend.

Heading out for one last ride of the summer? Law enforcement will be out on Wisconsin's trails and routes from Aug. 29-31 as part of the statewide "Think Smart Before You Start" campaign.

DNR wardens and county deputies will focus on safety, watching for individuals driving while intoxicated, speeding and operating recklessly. Let's do our part to ride responsibly and keep our trails safe for everyone.

When riding an ATV or UTV, always remember to plan ahead, stay sober, ride smart and wear your helmet (and seatbelt on a UTV!)

Last night, we were able to place our new bullet proof vests into service on all three ambulances. Having access to this equipment is another important step in keeping our EMS crews safe while serving the community.

A huge thank you to our generous donors Christensen Foundation, Donna Mae Geiger, and to one other donor who would like to stay anonymous! Your support helps protect those who protect others.

ARE YOU A YOUNG PERSON RIDING AN ATV OR ARE YOU ALLOWING ONE TO RIDE AN ATV? Yes? Read on.....

CAPD is seeing a lot of young people riding ATVs as their main mode of transportation or riding just for fun. We have received numerous complaints about ATV riders operating in ways that are unsafe, obnoxious and illegal. If this is you or your kid, it needs to stop. We are working to crack down on the unsafe & illegal ATV/UTV use in our cities.
There are laws and regulations concerning children riding on ATVs. We want to provide a brief overview, directly from the WI DNR website, of some of the laws & regulations that must be followed in order for your child to safely ride an ATV.
1) All ATV riders at least 12 and born on or after January 1, 1988, must possess a valid ATV safety certificate issued by this state or any other state or province. You must be in possession of this certificate if operating in areas open to the public.
2) No person under 12 may operate an ATV (there are exceptions)
3) All ATV safety certified operators ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult while operating on a designated ATV route. Accompanied means continuous verbal direction or control, but not necessarily on the same machine.
4) All ATV/UTV operators and passengers under the age of 18 are required to wear a minimum WI DOT standard ATV or motorcycle helmet with the chin strap properly fastened. (there are exceptions) Bicycle helmets do not meet this requirement.
5) No person under 16 may operate an UTV (there are exceptions)
6) An important reminder for any age, ATV/UTV use while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs while on any property that is open to the public is illegal. No person may operate an ATV/UTV with a BAC of .08% or more. You can also be arrested for operating under the influence with a BAC that is under .08% Under 21, no amount of alcohol is allowed, you must maintain absolute sobriety.

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Educate yourselves on the ATV/UTV Laws & Regulations before you ride or allow your child to ride. For more in depth details, we encourage you to take the time to review the DNR brochure https://widnr.widen.net/s/vxqlbz9kc7/wisconsin-atv_utv-regulations and website https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/atv to stay up to date on the laws & regulations.
We want everyone to be safe and enjoy the privilege of being able to ride ATVs on public roadways, trails and routes in our area.
