Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley Endorses Stacey Borden for Governor’s Council
Boston, July 18 – Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) today endorsed advocate and community leader Stacey Borden for Governor’s Council District 4.
“Stacey Borden has always brought her full self to the work of justice-seeking. She has dedicated her career to providing critical support to incarcerated people – helping them navigate family reunification and re-entry to community – combating recidivism, and breaking cycles of violence,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “She will bring a unique and essential perspective to the work of the Governor’s Council, which holds the power to recommend judges and consider commutations and pardons, among other important responsibilities. Our communities deserve and demand more elected leaders like Stacey, and I’m proud to endorse her in this race.”
Based on her own experiences of violence and incarceration, Borden became an abolitionist and advocate for women suffering sexual and domestic violence. She earned a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, with a concentration in addictions and trauma, and in 2016 founded New Beginnings Reentry Services, which works to reduce recidivism by advocating for and providing direct services to women who are reentering local communities.
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley made history in 2018 when she became the first woman of color elected to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress. During her time in Washington, D.C., she has made transforming our legal system a central priority. She has introduced the People’s Justice Guarantee, a resolution that sets forth a comprehensive, people-centered, decarceration-focused framework that would end the death penalty, eliminate for-profit prisons, and more.
