Dormont Police Our prime directive is to preserve our low crime rate and continue to respond to the community’s crime related needs in a quick and courteous fashion.

The Police Department was adopted by the Borough of Dormont in the early 1920's and continues to serve the 9,000 + residents of Dormont on a 24 hour basis. The Police Department consists of one chief, four sergeants, eight patrol officers, and four desk officers. Our prime directive is to preserve our low crime rate and continue to respond to the communities crime related needs in a quick and courteous fashion. The officers are all full-time and well trained and are proud to be able to offer one of the quickest response times of any police department in Allegheny County. The Department is a member of the Allegheny County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center and they coordinate all 9-1-1 services as well as routine call taking/dispatch for the Borough. With the incorporation of a recent mutual aid pact, we now have immediate access to the resources of over 12 adjacent police departments in the South Hills who will assist us in any major emergency. We also are a member of Medical Rescue Team South (MRTSA), which supplies Advanced Life Support ambulance service to six South Hills communities. All officers are trained in first-aid and Automated Defibrillators (AED's) that are utilized by all responding squad cars. The Dormont Police Department strives to supply professional law enforcement officers that will do their very best to provide a safe environment for all of our residents to enjoy. The Dormont Police Department is an active participant in community events including the annual public safety day. We are always available to speak to any member or group in the community about any topics including topics involving overall public safety, home safety, and crime prevention. The Dormont Police Department would also like to extend our appreciation to the relationships that we have acquired with our residents over the years helping us to make Dormont a pleasant place to live and work.

A note from our partners at Keystone Oaks School District:

We appreciate that our school grounds are an important part of our community, but we need your help keeping them safe and clean for our students.

Dogs are not permitted on the Dormont Elementary baseball field at any time, including before and after school. Several signs are posted around the field indicating this restriction. Unfortunately, we continue to receive reports of dogs running on the field, including off-leash, as well as instances of dog waste being left behind.

Because our students use this field to run, play, and participate in school activities, animal waste creates a health and sanitation concern.

We understand that dog owners are looking for places where their pets can exercise, but our elementary baseball field cannot serve as a dog exercise or play area. Please respect the posted signs and keep all dogs off the field.

Thank you for helping us keep this space clean, safe, and ready for our students.

Paul Miller’s Law became effective on June 05, 2025, and made it illegal in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to use a hand-held cellphone while driving. For the first year of the law, only warnings were authorized.

Beginning on June 06, 2026, Officers will begin issuing tickets for operators using a cell phone while driving.

As part of the education of vehicle operators, Police Departments along the SR 19 corridor in the South Hills will be conducting an education and enforcement initiative on June 1, stopping any drivers observed using their cell phones, even at a red light, to warn about the dangers of distracted driving.

Dormont PD will join Bethel Park,
Mount Lebanon, North Strabane, South Strabane, Peters Township and Upper St. Clair police departments in this work.
These Police Departments will be putting extra patrols on and around SR 19 in an effort to reduce distracted driving.

Officers will only be writing warnings for observed illegal usage of a cell phone; however appropriate enforcement action may be taken for other violations.

Power outages and storm damage continue across the area. Keep these safety tips in mind:

• Use candles with caution. Keep them away from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended. Battery powered lights are a safer option.

• Avoid unnecessary travel. Downed trees, power lines, and debris may still be blocking roadways.

• Check on neighbors, family members, and those with special needs, especially anyone who relies on electricity for medical equipment.

• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to help preserve food during power outages.

Stay safe and allow crews the space they need to restore services and clear roadways.
