🚌💙 It’s Day 5 of National School Bus Safety Week!

Keeping students safe on the road takes all of us! Motorists play an important role in protecting children as they travel to and from school, especially near bus stops, school zones, and residential neighborhoods.

Tip 5: Know the School Bus Signals!

🟡 Flashing yellow lights: Slow down and prepare to stop. The bus is getting ready to stop to pick up or drop off students.

🔴 Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm: Stop as required by law and remain stopped while children are boarding or exiting the bus.

🚗 Stay alert: Watch for children near bus stops, in school zones, and in neighborhoods, especially during morning and afternoon school hours.

🏡 Drive cautiously: Be extra careful when backing out of driveways or driving near stopped school buses. Children may be difficult to see.

💻 Want to learn more about school bus safety? We encourage all families to visit the Dothan City Schools district website and explore the “Transportation Services” section for additional safety resources, including our school bus safety video, rules and guidelines, and the Alabama School Bus Law. Taking a few minutes to review these materials helps us all better understand our responsibilities when it comes to school bus safety!

A few extra seconds of caution can make a difference in protecting a child’s life. Thank you for doing your part to help keep our students safe on the road, at the bus stop, and every day!

☀️🥪 The weather couldn’t have been better for a week of parent picnic lunches at The Carver School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology, Kelly Springs Elementary School, and Girard Elementary School! It was wonderful seeing parents take time out of their day to enjoy lunch, spend quality time with their students, and make special memories together. We’re grateful for every opportunity tobring families and students together! 💙

🚌💙 It’s Day 4 of National School Bus Safety Week!

School buses can have danger zones where the driver may not be able to see children. Knowing where these areas are and following safe crossing practices can help prevent accidents and keep our students safe.

Tip 4: Stay Out of the Danger Zone!

👣 Keep your distance: Remind your child to stay at least 10 giant steps away from a moving school bus and always stay away from the bus wheels, where the driver may not be able to see them.

🚫 Never walk behind the bus: Make sure your child knows to stay where the driver can see them and never go behind the bus.

🎒 Speak up if something drops: If your child drops something near the bus, they should tell the driver right away instead of trying to retrieve it themselves. The driver may not be able to see them.

✋ Cross safely: If your child needs to cross in front of the bus, they should walk to a point at least 12 feet in front of the bus, use the designated crossing area, make eye contact with the driver, and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing.

Together, we can help our students recognize the danger zone and make safe choices around the school bus!

The Dothan City Schools Difference Maker campaign recognizes employees nominated by someone at their school for going above and beyond for our students, schools and community.

Our next Difference Maker is Jennifer Smith, School Nurse at Dothan High School! Now in her 23rd year with Dothan City Schools, she continues to make a lasting impact by using her nursing skills and knowledge to support students and staff and help every student access their education. 🩺

After working in several fields of nursing, she found that school nursing offered a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students and serve her community in a meaningful way. She is passionate about ensuring students and staff receive the healthcare support they need, understanding that access to education starts with feeling cared for and supported. Over the years, students and parents have reminded her of the lasting impact she has made, including cherished memories of working one-on-one with student Quintavious Daniels, who taught her so much about communication, nursing and being a better person. To her, being part of the Wolfpack means that even though everyone has different roles, they share the same goal of educating young minds and preparing them for the future.

Thank you, Ms. Smith, for 23 years of dedication, compassion and advocacy for our students and staff. Your commitment to caring for others and making a difference in the lives of our Wolfpack is truly an honor to recognize. We appreciate you and are proud to call you a Difference Maker! 💙🐺

🚌💛 It’s Day 3 of National School Bus Safety Week!

Getting on and off the school bus safely is just as important as the ride itself. Taking a few extra seconds to follow safety rules can help prevent accidents and keep our students safe.

Tip #3: Get On and Off the Bus Safely!

🛑 Wait for the okay: Remind your child to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the door opens, and the driver signals that it’s safe to get on or off.

✋ Use the handrails: Encourage your child to always use the handrails when boarding or exiting the bus to help prevent slips and falls.

🎒 Secure loose items: Make sure backpack straps, hoodie strings, and other loose items are secure so they don’t get caught in the handrails or bus doors.

💡 Plan ahead: Encourage your child to pack everything they need in their backpack before leaving home to help prevent items from falling or getting left behind.

Together, we can help keep our students safe at every step of their school bus journey!
