During the City Commission strategic planning session held in April, the need to address solid waste collection revenues was discussed. An internal study was performed outlining the cost of service for each collection stream (garbage, trash, and recycling).

Residents currently pay $14.75 per month for these services, a rate that has remained unchanged since 2013. Today, the cost to provide those services averages approximately $35.06 per household each month. To help cover that difference, the City's General Fund currently transfers approximately $6 million annually to support solid waste operations.

On Thursday, June 11, 2026, the City Commission held a work session to discuss the future of residential solid waste services and the increasing costs associated with providing weekly garbage, trash, and recycling collection.

During the work session, City Commissioners reviewed a variety of potential options, including possible service level adjustments, fee changes, recycling alternatives, and other measures designed to reduce costs and improve the long-term sustainability of the program. You can view the presentation submitted by our Finance and Public Works Departments here – https://www.dothan.org/875/Collection-Service---Public-Survey -02bfdff62f37ea6363fcd3796afe8475

We understand that discussions involving City services and fees can be challenging, which is why no decisions have been made and public input is being sought before moving forward.

As City leaders continue evaluating these options, community input will play an important role in the process. Our goal is to find a solution that maintains quality services while being financially responsible and ensuring taxpayer dollars can continue supporting other important community needs such as road improvements, storm drainage projects, and public safety.

We encourage you to review the information presented and complete the survey below. Your feedback will help guide future discussions and ensure your voice is part of the decision-making process.
