Students, applications for the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council are open now! 🐺📣

SSAC Applications are NOW OPEN! 🐺📣 Dothan City Schools students in grades 7–12 are invited to apply for the 2026–2027 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council!

In partnership with Fearless Leadership Academy, selected students will take part in a year-long leadership development experience while having the opportunity to share ideas, provide feedback, and have a voice in the future of Dothan City Schools.

Interested 7-12 grade students can visit Dothan.K12.AL.US, select ‘Our District’, then ‘Superintendent”, then select ‘Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC)’ to learn more and download the application packet.

We hosted our Spring CTE Advisory Council meeting today to review the student and program data from the 2025–2026 school year. Looking back at the incredible accomplishments of the past year, one thing remains absolutely clear: the success of these programs relies heavily on the incredible dedication of local business and industry partners.

​CTE thrives when education meets industry. The direct input, expertise, and real-world guidance provided by these local professionals are what drive continuous improvement across all CTE programs. By sharing their knowledge, they ensure that classroom instruction aligns directly with the evolving demands of the local workforce.

​Because of their invaluable feedback and support, we are able to constantly expand and create new, high-impact opportunities for students.

​A massive thank you goes out to all of the business and industry leaders who invest their time, energy, and resources into preparing the next generation of professionals. This community is stronger because of these vital partnerships, and there is much anticipation for what will be accomplished together in the future!

Dothan City Schools is bringing reading, learning, and summer fun directly into the community with the launch of the district’s brand new Backyard Summer Reading Program, the first program of its kind for DCS.

The Backyard Summer Reading Program is designed to keep students engaged throughout the summer through read-alouds, interactive games, hands-on activities, literacy enrichment, free books for students to take home, and free meals for children 18 and under. Meals are first-come, first-served.

District and school leaders will lead read-alouds for students and families, giving them the opportunity to connect with school principals and district leadership in a fun, relaxed, and family-friendly environment ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.

“This program is about creating memorable and educational experiences for our students, encouraging a love for learning, and bringing families together in a positive way throughout the summer,” said Superintendent Dr. Garrick Askew. “We are excited to take learning beyond the classroom and right into our own backyards.”

The Backyard Summer Reading Program will take place at the following locations:

• Wednesday, June 3, 2026 | 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Jamison Village, 705 N. Lena Street

• Wednesday, June 10, 2026 | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Crawford Village, 602 S. Lena St.

We want to send a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to our amazing community partners at All In Credit Union! Your incredible willingness to partner with our students and open your doors to them is what Career and Technical Education is all about.

​By collaborating with our Graphic Arts and Culinary Arts programs, All In didn't just showcase our student talent—they provided true, hands-on, real-world experience.
​Our Dothan Tech Graphic Arts students got to live out the entire professional design process: taking a concept from the initial brainstoming phase, working through actual client feedback, printing the heavy-duty vinyl, and completing the final installation on-site at the branch.

​And let’s not forget our incredible Dothan Tech Culinary students, who stepped up to the plate by planning the Grand Opening menu, preparing the food, and providing top-tier catering service for the official ribbon-cutting guests! 🍽️

We want to send a massive congratulations and an even bigger THANK YOU to the incredible Career Prep team at Carver 9th Grade Academy!

​Career Prep is where the journey begins. These educators are instrumental in providing our 9th graders with the foundational skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to earn their College and Career Readiness (CCR) indicator—a crucial milestone and graduation requirement.

​Oftentimes, the quiet, daily grind of Career Prep can go unnoticed, but let's be clear: the future success of our students in high school, at Dothan Tech, and beyond would be incredibly difficult without the groundwork these four lay every single day.
​Helping 9th graders secure an overall CCR rate of over 80%— by earning the Microsoft Office Specialist certifications—is nothing short of phenomenal.

They aren't just teaching computer skills; they are unlocking doors to the workforce and post-secondary success before these students even step foot into a high school building.

​Thank you, team, for your relentless dedication, your leadership, and for setting our students up to win from day one. Dothan Tech is ready to keep building on the incredible foundation you've created!

At last night’s board meeting, the Dothan City Schools Board of Education recognized the outstanding teachers of Carver 9th Grade Academy Career Prep for their dedication to student achievement and College and Career Readiness.

Thanks to their hard work and leadership, students continue to earn Microsoft Office Specialist certifications that provide valuable workforce and technology skills. Their efforts have helped students achieve an overall CCR rate of more than 80%, with 159 certifications earned during the Spring 2026 window alone.

Congratulations and thank you to Itaya White, Illana Freeman, Quadarian Broome, and Steven Welch for your commitment to helping students succeed in school and beyond!

We are ecstatic to learn one our very own has been named a top 10 finalists for the 2026 Claes Nobel Educator of the Year Award. This is a massive honor, and no one deserves it more than Ms. Gina Burdeshaw.

​While the rest of the nation is just learning how special she is, Dothan Tech has known it for years. As wonderful as she is as a Graphic Arts instructor, she is an even better person. Her classroom is a true launchpad for success.

​Over the years, she has changed countless lives. She doesn't just teach—she mentors, encourages, and intentionally guides her students directly onto their future career paths. The number of successful futures she has helped shape is truly immeasurable.

​Ms. Burdeshaw, thank you for your endless dedication, your passion, and the love you pour into our students every single day. You deserve this honor completely, and we are so blessed to have you on our team.

​We are incredibly proud of you and can't wait to cheer you on in Atlanta this August!

Remember in December when we told you Dothan Tech Graphic Arts educator Gina Burdeshaw had been named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS)? Well now she’s officially been selected as one of just 10 finalists nationwide for the 2026 Claes Nobel Educator of the Year Award! 🎉

Ms. Burdeshaw earned the national recognition for her dedication to students, passion for education, and the meaningful impact she makes in and beyond the classroom each day at Dothan Tech. As part of the honor, she’ll be recognized this August in Atlanta during NSHSS Scholar’s Day, where one finalist will be named the national Educator of the Year.

Congratulations, Ms. Burdeshaw! Thank you for continuing to inspire creativity, leadership, and excellence for our students. 🐺💙
